Selected Titles for December 2023

Welcome to our holiday season newsletter! Seasons change at this time of year, and December can be unpredictable. I ate the last of my garden tomatoes, cleared out my garden and put up my lights on my holly bushes. Last year we had -9 degree weather in December, so we're ready for all kinds of weather!

This is our friend Brent Hull, of Hull Historical, who has visited our shop many times. He is a preservation specialist in Dallas/Fort Worth, who specializes in all aspects of historic preservation: from millwork to new-old house construction. (See numbers 38 and 39 in this newsletter). He did a ten-part series for the History channel, and now has an interesting series on YouTube: New House, Old Soul. Here is a link to one of his segments on trim and millwork, but the entire series is excellent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEvSXjuNzLg

Under the heading "proud father," my younger daughter Kim walked the runway in an IIDA production this month. The IIDA (Interior Design Association) held its 25th annual Fashion Show. Teams of designers, architects, and industry representatives teamed up to create outlandish and elegant unconventional fashion looks, made primarily from industry materials. Kim partnered with a local Maine architect to not only model, but also to help create two looks that fit the theme of ‘Folklore.' The cloak she boasts is made out of custom printed window cling, her ‘Birkin’ bag is made from vinyl flooring, and her pants are made from furniture upholstery. And my little 'runway vixen' won, for 'best use of materials'! Check out photos and videos at the link here: https://www.kimschuyler.com/iida

This holiday issue has some interesting offerings. We have an impressive lot of Weale's and ICS technical literature pieces, ranging from stone cutting to stair building. Also, we obtained several gouaches (original art) from French textile designer Arthur Litt. These original painting designs are very attractive, and would liven up any office! And we have a nice selection of giftworthy titles for the holiday season.

Most importantly, we hope the holidays are enjoyable and the new year brings you continued good health.

Happy browsing!

Furthermore, timber buildings are now taller and larger than ever before. This book treats this subject in a new way - systematic, comprehensive, and easily understandable. The book includes the building envelope, so critical for energy savings and the architectural design, plus the wall and suspended floor systems so fundamental to the construction. This standard work of reference includes a wealth of drawings, tables, diagrams, and photographs to illustrate the current, forward-looking state of the art in contemporary timber engineering. Roots of Home: Our Journey to a New Old House

Versaci, Russell

[Architectural History]. Versaci, Russell. Roots of Home: Our Journey to a New Old House. Newton, CT: Taunton, 2008. First edition. Quarto, pp 265, illustrated with color photographs. Hardcover. New in new DJ.

Both an architectural feast and field guide for creating new old houses, this book traces the development of today's traditional homes from the earliest colonial styles in a visually stunning journey. The author takes us back to the beginning, when our ancestors built homes that reflected their Old World pasts tempered with the New World realities. As they settled new territories, they carried the homes of their forefathers with them like a touchstone. They sowed farms and towns with houses similar to the ones they left behind, but suited to the new climates and materials surrounding them. Each old-house style showcased, though always decidedly American - New England Colonial, Pennsylvania Dutch, French Creole, Spanish Mission - represents the cumulative history of generations adapting to new places. With the author as our guide, we see how yesterday's houses evolved into the classic homes we love today and we learn how to create a new old house that evokes ageless character. (10436)   $35.00

Brent Hull, noted preservationist and millwork specialist, researched the history of his specialties for years, gathering hundreds of rare trade catalogs and pattern books (I know, because he purchased dozens of them over the years from me!). The result is this Wiley published title, the first major attempt to write the overview of historic millwork. As ambitious as the subject is, Hull's book does it justice: beautifully illustrated, technically quite detailed but written with the professional and antique homeowner in mind. A hard-to-find title; even the author has no more. With Building in France, Building in Iron, Building in Ferroconcrete (1928)—published now for the first time in English—Sigfried Giedion positioned himself as an eloquent advocate of modern architecture. This was the first book to exalt Le Corbusier as the artistic champion of the new movement. It also spelled out many of the tenets of Modernism that are now regarded as myths, among them the impoverishment of nineteenth-century architectural thinking and practice, the contrasting vigor of engineering innovations, and the notion of Modernism as technologically preordained. Quarto, pp. 375, indexed, over 400 illustrations, including 55 plates in full color. Decorated Cloth over Boards. New in new DJ.

This volume was published in tandem with an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1986, that later traveled to the Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta in 1987 and 1988. The exhibit, and the book, captures the mood, the energy, of an age in transition - the years between the two world wars. Although there were vast differences between the decades encompassed - prosperity in the 1920s, depression in the 1930s - the machine was the principal motivating force in each. America, on the verge of a new art, and ultimately a new culture, had come into her own at last. From her great achievements in technology and industry would arise not simply a modern style, but an entirely new way of life. (20482)   $25.00

[Stone]. Snow, Dan . In the Company of Stone: The Art of the Stone Wall. New York: Artisan, 2001. First edition. Quarto, pp. 118, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. As New.

Daniel Snow is a waller, an artisan who builds walls, terraces, caverns, and the occasional sphere or pool out of dry stone. It's an ancient skill--building with only what the earth provides. No mortar, no nails, nothing to hold his creations together except gravity, an invisible glue he can sense in the stones' "conversations" of squeaks and rumbles. A hollow sound means a void needs to be filled; a solid fit is secured with the sound of a bolt being thrown. Snow's evocative prose and Peter Mauss's richly textured photographs of Snow's work reveal the nuance and beauty of walling--and of one man's relationship with nature. The result is by turns poetic and practical. (21965)   $20.00

A single space where various functions are united places the view from the villa into a new context. Distinguished contributors consider how the modern concept of heritage emerged in the nineteenth century, how politics as well as art and design played a role in the creation of a historic buildings culture, and how the writings and activities of designer William Morris and architect Philip Webb shaped thinking about conservation. Chapters of the book address such diverse topics as the place of historic buildings in Morris’s thinking, the relation of the Arts and Crafts Movement to Victorian ideas of heritage, the distortion of Morrisian ideals in early twentieth-century New England, and the emergence of an urban vs. rural conservation culture. Drawing on extensive historical research, the book casts new light not only on the history of the Conservation Movement but also on its role today. (21539)   $25.00

Building codes and standards are often seen as obstacles to design excellence. Not any more! With the help of this down-to-earth guide, architecture professionals and students can stop dreading these rules and start using them to their advantage. The book works the way projects do, moving through each stage of the planning process to identify and consolidate the basic regulatory requirements that must be addressed at every step along the way. It equips readers not only to recognize issues that call for regulatory research and to work effectively with appropriate consultants, but also to suggest strategic directions that are compatible with regulatory requirements and to make informed decisions in response to consultants' advice. This book also covers zoning ordinances and covenants, as well as rules related to accessibility, historic preservation, environmental quality, consumer protection, and a host of other critical issues. Information is extensively cross-referenced to make topics simple to find, and the uniform methodology applied to each regulatory issue makes the book both easy to follow and design-friendly.
