Selected Titles for December 2022

Well, it was bound to happen! I had hoped to keep the heat off until Thanksgiving, with this warm "Indian Summer" weather we've had this fall. But one morning last week I went down to the bookstore floor, to check the temperature and saw that the middle floor was 48 degrees! So I relented, and turned on the heat. Now it's a balmy 56 degrees all over. My buddy, the preservation pioneer Clem Labine texted me back: "and I thought you New England guys were tough!"

I harvested the last of the tomatoes, and all I have left in the garden are Swiss chard and kale, for my evening salads.

Last month was the ABAA-sponsored Boston Book Fair, the first one in three years. It's always a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues, and to see what is hot in the book world. One colleague had a wonderful cat dress. (Hank, my bookstore cat, approved.) I also spent time with colleagues from Europe, including Dan Morgan, a fellow dealer from Prague, who had a spiffy Art Deco wallpaper sample book. Check out his holdings: https://www.morganbooks.eu/

One of the most popular offerings last month was the window glazier's vintage toolbox, which was ordered many times. It sold to a local customer, Chuck Robertson, who picked it up the next day. It turns out he's a fellow gear head, so we took a drive in the Thunderbird, to Phillips Academy.

This pre-holiday listing has a good group of gift-worthy titles. I found another couple of copies of our famous "cat-ladder" book, for that cat lover in your life. But I also ran across a similar title for dog owners. Also we are featuring a new, and widely expanded edition of Mary and John Gage's "The Art of Splitting Stone." Plus, there are some sensational new arrivals in many areas, including scarce Seattle and San Francisco trade pieces for our West Coast customers.

And, as always, my daughters and I wish all of you a peaceful and healthy holiday season and new year. Here is a shot of the three of us, from an outdoor concert we saw in Portland, Maine last summer.

Happy browsing!

Upjohn's Rural Architecture

Upjohn, Richard

[Architecture]. Upjohn, Richard. Upjohn's Rural Architecture Designs, Working Drawings and Specifications for a Wooden Church, and Other Rural Structures. New York: George P, Putnam, 1852. First edition. Folio (12.5" x 17"), pp. 6 plus 22 plates of church, chapel, schoolhouse and parsonage designs, all predominately in the Gothic styles. Ex-library markings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

The book is particularly detailed concerning the church designs. In addition to detailing the exact size and how many of each timber were needed, Upjohn specified how the joists were to be laid, the doors to be constructed, and the paint and/or varnish to be used. He also gave information on how to build the lectern (with quatrefoil carvings); pews (with Gothic trefoil accents); the tower and spire, topped with a cross with trefoil accents; the organ case; the bishop's chair; etc. The one-room schoolhouse design is Gothic, but not as highly ornamented as Gothic designs frequently were. The parsonage design has a piazza with brackets, more commonly found in Italian designs, but also has verge-boards and other Gothic decoration. Richard Upjohn (1802-1878) was an English-born artisan and architect who established an architectural practice in New York City and became a national leader in the picturesque mode in American architecture. He is best known for his Gothic Revival church architecture, which had a widespread and long-lasting influence. Upjohn's design for Christ Church in Raleigh, NC epitomized his Gothic Revival style and is one of the nation's most intact and representative examples of his Early English style. A rare and important book that we are proud to offer for the first time. (21589)   $900.00

Small quarto, pp. xxxiii, 370, indexed, illustrated with b/w line drawings and photographs. Cloth over Boards, gilt lettering. Very Good.

This volume was produced to cover the whole range of English Gothic woodwork. It makes a real attempt to explain what were the motives of the mediaeval wood-worker; to ascertain why benches were arranged in a certain manner, and what principles actuated the wood-worker in planning stalls. An effort was made to give a practical analysis of the various methods in which various problems, constructional or artistic, were solved by these inspired craftsmen. The illustrations, chosen from a vast collection from all parts of the country, give a good general idea of the extraordinary wealth of material in the country. Very many examples, some of them of great beauty and importance, have never been illustrated before. Besides the photographic illustrations, a number of measured drawings has been introduced, their purpose to give an idea of the scale of the photographs, and to throw light on the methods of mediaeval design. The second edition has many additional illustrations, including 16 full-page collotypes. (21581)   $70.00

Illustrated Description of a Design in the Persian-Indian Style of Architecture for the First Mashrak-El-Azkar (Bahai Temple) to be Erected in America humbly offered to the Center of the Covenant through the Bahai Temple Unity April 26-28, 1920. Charles Mason Remey (1874-1974) was an American architect and author and adherent of the Baha'i faith. He designed and built Baha'i houses of worship in Uganda and Ethiopia (three others were designed but never constructed), and traveled extensively to promote the religion. In 1917, he published a book with several preliminary designs proposed for the first Mashrak-El-Azkar to be built in America, but none had been selected by the time the Twelfth Annual Convention of Bahais in America was held in New York in 1920. Remey received word that a choice of designs would be made at the convention, so he made this set of models of his Persian-Indian style design to present to the convention. He felt this size and design best suited the practical and spiritual needs of the community, and he used the images and text of this presentation to urge the church leaders to select this design for the Chicago project. A very rare primary source of church history. (21605)   $150.00

The Green Family mansion was built in 1850, replacing the original family homestead built by Dr. John Green in 1757. The original homestead was divided in two (side by side) and the new mansion was built in between, complete with 42 rooms. The mansion existed as part of Green Hill Park, after the land was purchased as park land in 1905. One room was used as a laboratory for students studying native birds and another was used as a lecture, assembly, and meeting room by the Worcester Natural History Society. In 1957, after 52 years of public use, the wooden mansion was torn down, with plights of vandalism, damage from the hurricane in 1948, and high maintenance costs contributing to the decision to destroy the historic structure. These two photographs show family members enjoying the rolling, landscaped lawns that sloped towards the pond. A handsome pair. (21627)   $75.00

Scheidig, Alther and Klaus G. Beyer [Photography]

[Design]. Scheidig, Alther and Klaus G. Beyer [Photography]. Weimar Crafts of the Bauhaus 1919-1924 An Early Experiment in Industrial Design. Leipzig: Werkstattarbeiten, 1966. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 157, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Text in German. Cloth over Boards in Mylar Jacket. Very Good.

This book analyzes the development of the Bauhaus from its Arts and Crafts origins and early Expressionist atmosphere toward functionalism and the utilization of technological and industrial processes. The author states that the attitude expressed by Gropius and his colleagues was a Morrisian dedication to honest craftsmanship. But the development, both toward industrialization and an aesthetic of mechanization, was very rapid. New aesthetic principles prevailed; there was beauty in the machine. The examples in this book of textiles and pottery pay homage to the Arts and Crafts movement, but have their own unique style and charm. Very scarce. (21628)   $50.00

The Care and Conservation of Georgian Houses

Davey, Andy; Bob Heath; Desmond Hodges; Roy Milne; Mandy Palmer

[Conservation]. Davey, Andy; Bob Heath; Desmond Hodges; Roy Milne; Mandy Palmer. The Care and Conservation of Georgian Houses A Maintenance Manual. London: Architectural Press, 1980. First (revised) paperback edition. Quarto, pp. 225, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Paperback. Very Good in Wraps.

Although our stock of Georgian buildings is still sadly diminishing, there is also a strong and growing movement for their care, conservation and re-use. This is a task which requires not only aesthetic sensitivity but also a great deal of hard technical knowledge about the materials and construction methods employed throughout the structure and the fabric of the building. This manual was developed for owners and architects involved in the care of the wealth of Georgian buildings in what is recognized as being one of the most architecturally distinguished parts of the Scottish capital. The value and interest of this manual was immediately recognized as going far beyond local boundaries; it is in fact a model for anyone - house owner, local authority or architect - who is responsible for the care and upkeep of a stone-built 18th-century building. Includes many illustrations and a walking tour itinerary. List of existing structures built before 1825. Original Cloth. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

Sooner or later, most Americans have (or make) some occasion to visit Washington. That is as it should be. Sooner or later too, most of those drawn to Washington become aware of Georgetown, that unique square mile where shady streets lead one past old houses which often look much as they did when Washington and Jefferson passed by. In this book, one finds memorials, not infrequently built by these very men to be their own homes. On and in these old homes are messages. Just as they stand, they are sermons on architecture; on all the arts of gracious living; on what constitutes the good life; the sound society. Perhaps this book may help you to read these wordless messages, to hear these silent sermons. In any case, you will enjoy its pictures and stories and because of it, you will the more appreciate the old town. (21615)   $20.00
