Selected Titles for April 2024

Welcome to our April assemblage of interesting and uncommon titles! And even though today, as I write this, is April 1, our March weather was anything but frivolous. We had the wettest month in years. And in a town like North Reading that is defined by the Ipswich River aquifer, we are quickly approaching flood levels. As the photo shows, this week's forecast rain may push our nearby reservoir up over the road.

We had great fun last month at the Old House & Barn Expo. There were over 2,000 guests in attendance, and our booth was always full. We met over 50 new customers, and saw hundreds of old friends. I was especially encouraged by the large number of younger attendees!

We have run out of copies, long ago, of David Hayle's book The Magic of Scagliola. David has been cycling around the world, this time through Mexico and Latin America, when he flew over the handlebars of his famous e-bike. So, while recuperating, he had a few more copies printed in England, and sent us a few. We'll be listing them in our next newsletter.

This month's newsletter features some of the most interesting titles we've ever offered, from #1 onward. We have an important Victorian chromolithographic plate book (#1), the best Asher Benjamin copy we've had in years (#3), a spectacular French Art Deco plate portfolio (#2), an extremely scarce New Orleans 19th-century title on stair building(#6), and much more.

The Immigrant Builder, or Practical Hints to Handy-Men

Fred Hodgson worked as a surveyor, builder, and architect in Ontario, and was remarkably prolific as an author and writer on the subject of practical building and construction techniques (See #15!!). Uncommon title, especially in its first edition. Eric Smith, who wrote Lost Skills of the 19th Century," studied a copy of the tenth edition from 1884 for his book, and claimed "the archives have no record of any of the previous nine editions." Chapters on log cabins, slab houses, plank houses, plank and stud houses, the balloon house, the frame house, construction with earth, fenceposts and gates, and much more. A title that would appeal to both historians and builders, especially with this particular copy's association to author Fred Hodgson. (22504)   $400.00

The deterioration of stone in exposed sculptures and buildings has been evident to many concerned observers throughout the centuries. Although interest in the conservation of stone has a venerable history, its emergence as a specialized craft began slowly and tentatively in the 19th century. The range of materials currently available for stone treatment is large, and growing. Some of the chemicals that have been and are employed in conservation work are toxic or carcinogenic. It is essential that the conservator be sufficiently well-informed in safety precautions to employ these materials. The scientifically oriented monographs in this book are addressed to those engaged in or preparing for work in stone conservation. (22543)   $60.00

This fresh and provocative book answers a question that countless people have asked about our man-made world: how did things get so ugly? We have admired the natural grace of old buildings and wondered why today it seems so hard to create their equal. We live in a time when only a gifted and dedicated team of designers can build something approaching the beauty that 18th-century carpenters could do all by themselves. What went wrong? This book examines the historical moment in the 1830s when builders and architects began to lose their surety, and shows how we can recapture the lost magic of architecture and recover our sense of place. A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England

Wainwright, Paul [Photographer]; essay by Peter Benes

[New England]. Wainwright, Paul [Photographer]; essay by Peter Benes. A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England. Portsmouth, NH: Jetty House, 2009. First edition. Oblong small quarto, pp. 114, indexed, illustrated with 77 b/w photographs. Trade Cloth over Boards. As New in Fine DJ.

When built in the 1700s, meetinghouses were the center of both religious and civic life - concepts not at all separate in colonial New England. Working with four-by-five-inch sheet film and a wooden field camera, photographer Paul Wainwright has collected a wealth of images of New England’s surviving colonial meetinghouses that go beyond mere documentation of what these buildings look like - they explore the feeling of “presence” that exists in them. Employing only natural light, the photographer has captured his sense of intimate wonder that he gets whenever he enters one of these structures. These meetinghouses not only present a fascinating glimpse into our nation’s colonial history, but are beautiful as well. An accompanying essay by noted colonial historian Peter Benes elaborates on the communities that built and used these meetinghouses, and traces a narrative rich in the history and architecture of New England. When the author bought a charming but modest 60-year-old island retreat in coastal Maine, he couldn't help but admire its unusual construction. An eminent expert on engineering, history, and design, he began wondering about the place's origins and evolution. Sleuthing around dimly lit closets, knotty-pine wall panels, and even a secret passage - but never removing so much as a nail - he zooms in on the details and also steps back to examine the structure in the context of its time and place. This ode to loving design will leave readers enchanted and inspired. (22509)   $35.00

Principles of Decorative Design

Dr. Christopher Dresser was one of the first of the few Victorian designers who totally accepted the advent of the machine. He was as perturbed as most of his contemporaries at the abysmal standard of mass-produced ornament. But his remedy was not in nostalgia for obsolete craft methods, it was to produce and adapt designs suited to the new manufacturing processes. This boo, first published in 1873, is one of his most practical and interesting books.A pioneer of functionalism, a precursor of Art Nouveau, Dresser's designs have a timelessness, an assurance and certainty that have rarely been equalled. This was the first book to present a global and historical range of ornament in color, the first to display "primitive" art for its design content, and among the first to suggest nature as a basic design source (the concluding section presents a magnificent series of illustrations of leaves and flowers). Widely used and circulated, it was a prophetic work which marked a major change in Western aesthetics and heralded a move towards nonrepresentational art. Its value as a beautifully organized and produced pictorial museum of historic ornamental design remains unsurpassed. (22533)   $25.00

In the summer of 1862, the Lincoln family moved three miles north of the White House for the summer, to a gracious Gothic Revival cottage on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home, the nation's first refuge for old and disabled veterans. The author fills in a critical gap in Lincoln's life, using diaries, letters, and eyewitness accounts of life at the Soldiers' Home. American suburban houses of this period represent a unique body of architecture that is much less known and studied than it deserves. This book shows these homes, many of which could be ordered directly from catalogs (Montgomery Ward, Sears, and Aladdin, among others), to be solid in workmanship and materials, open and sunny in layout, centrally heated, and equipped with many built-in amenities. The book also studies their appeal in a wider context, as visual metaphors for American ideals and values of the immediately post-frontier period. (22527)   $40.00
