Empowering Self-Direction in New Jersey

In New Jersey, people may choose a traditional provider-managed model, using Medicaid/DDD approved providers; a self-directed model; or a combination of both models to receive services and supports. This means that people may use a Medicaid/DDD approved provider agency for some services and hire a Self-Directed Employee (or employees) for other services. People may also choose to use their individual budget to purchase a program, class or service that is available to the general public through a community vendor (for example, through Goods and Services). The ability to self-direct services is available in both the DDD Community Care Program and Supports Program.

The Boggs Center: Advocating for People with Developmental Disabilities

The Boggs Center provides information and training to help people with developmental disabilities and their families navigate complex systems of support and advocate for the lives they want. People with developmental disabilities and their families can get involved through leadership development opportunities and contributing to the education of practicing and future professionals by sharing their perspectives and lived experiences.

Introducing JobsThatCare.NJ.Gov

The Department of Human Services and The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities collaborated on and released the JobsThatCare.NJ.Gov website in November 2023. This website helps individuals find jobs as Direct Support Professionals and Certified Home Health Aides, supporting both adults and children with disabilities or chronic medical conditions.

  • Direct Support Professionals: Support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in home and community life.

  • Certified Home Health Aides: Assist adults age 60 and older, and individuals with disabilities, to live in their homes by supporting daily activities.

  • Additional Jobs: More roles in the direct support and service workforce will be added over time.

  • Job Seekers: Directed to Indeed, Career Builder, Monster, and the Dept. of Labor & Workforce Development’s Job Source Website.

A promotional campaign launched in April 2024 to highlight this resource. Employers of Self-Directed Employees who advertise on these sites can benefit by adding the keywords "Direct Support Professional" to their ads.
The website and advertising campaign are supported, in part, by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of a financial assistance award totaling $5,000,000 with a portion funded by CMS/HHS to the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Money Follows the Person Demonstration.

Client Spotlight: The Journey to Independence!

We enjoy supporting a great young man who is affectionately called "Big O" by friends and family.

A Mother's Lens:

Big O is a wonderful, compassionate soul with a love for singing, drawing, and socializing. His journey began with challenges, being born with a club foot that required multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy. Despite these early hurdles and a later autism diagnosis, Big O's determination never wavered. With the steadfast support of his family, dedicated doctors, and caring teachers, Big O thrived in high school, earning the nickname "Big O."

A turning point came with the intervention of Spectrum Support coordinators. Their tailored assistance and advocacy helped Big O manage behavioral challenges and provided the support needed for his growth. Aida expresses deep gratitude to Laura Junta, Corrinne Stegner, Corinne V, Rachel Baldwin, and Nicole Bryan for their exceptional dedication and patience. Their efforts have been crucial in ensuring a positive environment for Big O and many others in the community.

The Supportive Touch of Spectrum's Support Coordinator:

Big O's journey towards independence highlights his determination and the invaluable support from his loved ones. Aspiring to live independently, Big O embarked on the self-direction path with his DDD services. His mother played a vital role in securing a housing subsidy and finding a suitable apartment, while his support coordinator connected him with a Community Based Support Agency for daily living assistance.

After meticulous planning, Big O moved into his own apartment, marking a significant milestone. Though the initial days were challenging, Big O faced each obstacle with positivity and determination. Now, months into his journey, Big O enjoys the freedom of independent living, mastering daily routines and making his own choices. His story is a powerful testament to the impact of self-direction and community support, inspiring others to believe that with determination and the right support, anything is possible!
