Hello dear GISH PICKS: CURATED CULTURE FOR KIDS & ADULTS reader!
I sometimes hear that performing arts events and museums are too costly. This can be true and it’s because it’s costly to put on a show. I am intimate with many arts groups and I promise that they want as many people as possible to see their performances! So – it’s time to get creative to see creative. With some sleuthing (and help from me!), you can enjoy a lot of art for a little bit of money. I suggest you start by looking at websites of your fave orgs and scour them for freebies: free events, free days, pay-what-you-can tickets, etc.
You can save money during Houston Theater Week, which takes place each August for people to enjoy BOGO (Buy One Get One) tickets from select theatre companies. Two tickets for the price of one is a lot of fun!
And here are three easy tips: USHER so that you can see shows for free; look for FREE DAYS at museums (or for free museums); and look for DISCOUNT OFFERS by places like Houston CityPASS, Houston Arts Pass, and Visit Houston, which has a page full of arts & culture experiences.
You can usher for several theatre companies including 4th Wall Theatre Company, A.D. Players, Alley Theatre, Ensemble Theatre, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, MATCH, and Stages (click on each org for links to ushering info). Many museums are always free or offer free days – either on a regular basis or for special events; see a great round-up by Visit Houston here. The Holocaust Museum Houston offers free entry to everyone on Thursdays from 2-5pm and to youth up to 18 years old every day. They also offer annual free entry on several days, including MLK Day and International Holocaust Rememberance Day. The Children’s Museum is free on Thursdays from 5-8pm. The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Menil Collection, and Rothko Chapel – among others -- are always free. And The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – as well as many other museums – are free on Thursdays.
Get out there and enjoy Houston arts without spending all your money!
