LESSON SEVEN: Sediment forebays make pond maintenance cheaper and easier

The images above show sediment forebays located in Kenosha County. Images provided by WDNR/RPW.

What: Naturalized forebays for improved sediment capture

Where: At each inlet to the stormwater pond to capture sediment prior to entering the main pool

Why:

  • Makes removal of sediment easier as equipment is smaller and readily available (a municipal-owned backhoe may suffice)
  • Reduces maintenance costs by more than $40,000 over 20 year period (calculations provided by engineering partners-specific site conditions may impact this cost)
  • Decreases the likelihood of algae blooms as nutrient pollution (phosphorus) adheres to the trapped sediment in the forebays
  • Improves water quality in the pond and throughout the watershed

Note: Sediment forebays require more frequent dredging, however, the cost is reduced as a smaller sediment volume is being managed. Dredging should occur when forebay depth has been reduced by 50%. This will vary based on surrounding watershed conditions.

Conclusion: Where appropriate, encourage developers to include a forebay(s) in all new stormwater ponds
