Hello Lions,

It always surprises me how quickly the weeks go by after we return from winter vacation in January. We just completed the tenth week of instruction in the second semester and the third quarter is done! Now we take a week off for spring break. This is a great opportunity for students to rest and recharge so they can return for the fourth quarter fully energized and ready to:

Above and Beyond Award

Big shout out to La Sierra High School special education teacher, Chris Salcido, who was just named the recipient of the 2023-2024 North Orange County SELPA Above and Beyond Award. This annual award celebrates individuals who go above and beyond for students. Mr. Salcido is being recognized for the contributions he has made to special education, for being a leader in his field, and for making a difference in the lives of students. Congratulations Mr. Salcido!

On Time Cookies

As part of La Vista/La Sierra's "On Time, On Track!" Tardy Campaign to promote good attendance habits we awarded students who went the entire month of February without any tardies or unexcused absences with a freshly-baked cookie from our cafeteria. Nearly fifty students received cookies on Monday for having zero tardies or unexcused absences in February. Great job, Lions! Get to all your classes on time and you could win a cookie next month!

St. Patrick's Science

Jeremiah Sanchez, Rin Molina, Ravi Rafay, and Gisel Ramirez from Science Club put together a St. Patrick's Day investigation to find out if the viscosity of water affects the absorption of water into flowers. The water was dyed green with food coloring, so club members could see the effect of the flower's uptake of water, and varying amounts of gelatin were put in each to increase the viscosity of the liquid. After two days, students saw some interesting results! The petals in the beaker with no gelatin started to show some green coloration and are doing quite well compared to its companions. The beakers with 2 - 10 grams of gelatin did not show any green coloration in their petals and they all wilted. Interestingly, the beaker with the most gelatin (10 grams) wilted last! Although students are not sure why the gelatin is affecting the flowers this way they enjoyed planning and completing the investigation, and they are coming to some interesting conclusions, such as maybe the increase in gelatin preserved the flower a little longer than the others.

Rising Stars

La Vista/La Sierra students, Vanessa Juarez and Marianna Alfaro, were celebrated in the Rising Stars Student Recognition at the Fullerton Joint Union High School District Board Meeting on Tuesday night. Both students consistently go above and beyond what is required and have succeeded academically in the face of adversity. Congratulations Vanessa and Marianna.

Students of the Month

The February Student of the Month Ceremony was held in the library on Wednesday. We are so proud of these students whose good choices are making such a positive impact on their futures. Congratulations!

Claymation Continued

On Tuesday, students participating in the Muckenthaler Center STEAM project continued working on their claymation videos. The focus was on storyboarding to show the key movements for the final projects. Students also worked on sculpting their characters and building their backdrops. Students said what they enjoy the most about the Muckenthaler experience is connecting with peers, and creating new things.

Your Health Matters

This month’s theme is “YOUR HEALTH MATTERS”. We honor the reality that our mental health and physical health are both important and intertwined. Both of these systems can impact our abilities to attend school daily, engage in our learning, earn school credits, and focus on our academic goals. Our physical health can affect our mental health and vice versa. How? Well, we invite our two experts of these systems to share weekly tips that can empower you to take care of both your physical and mental health this month. Here is their “tip of the week”.

Magic Water

Nurse Julie Vinson is constantly asked to help students who describe having stomach aches, headaches, or even some level of anxiety. She developed a strategy by telling students, “Let’s drink some magic water to see if it helps,” because she has noticed many students don’t drink enough water for their wellness. And, it works! Students report having decreased symptoms sometimes simply by having some water. Inspired by Nurse Julie, La Vista/La Sierra promoted the importance of hydration to help address both health and mental health symptoms. As the students navigate finals week, we reminded them of the benefits of drinking water using the acronym W.A.T.E.R. Science shows that water can:

  • Ward off tension and anxiety
  • Attention concentration, and memory improvement
  • Takes away mood irritability and confusion
  • Energy increase
  • Removes toxins from the body

La Vista/La Sierra nurse, Mental Health Specialist, and ASB collaborated for a tabling providing information and “magic water” to students. We are thankful for this collaboration as we continue to communicate to staff and students: “Your Health Matters”.

Dear FJUHSD Families,

This past year may have presented a variety of difficulties for students and their families. Some of us, including our students, are experiencing fatigue in response to the pandemic and other factors. Some students are disconnecting (or disengaging) and may find it hard to motivate ourselves and engage in school. Before the pandemic, one in four may have needed help maintaining our mental health. Those numbers are on the rise and reaching higher levels due to limited in-person connections to people, places, and things that help us stay healthy.

As our district works in accordance with state and local guidelines to safely reopen campuses we know that the process is challenging and many in our community are in need of help.

If a student or family member is in need of support or are worried about a loved one, Care Solace can help students and their families find mental health and substance use treatment options matched to your needs regardless of the circumstance.

FJUHSD students, staff, and families can use Care Solace at no charge to them. Care Solace’s team is available 24/7 and can support students and families in any language.
