Amazing Ideas in the Falling Walls Lab: The 2019 Falling Walls Conference in Berlin
|
|
On the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall, the Falling Walls Conference was held in the German capital on November 9th, 2019.
Since 2009, this annual conference aims to figuratively break down walls and overcome borders by inviting the world's leading researchers to present their latest breakthroughs and solutions to global challenges; including climate, energy, health, nutrition and sustainable business.
The DAAD is a key academic partner that aids in the preliminary decision process for the Falling Walls Lab, recently selecting 40 finalists from across the globe for this Berlin event.
"We are pleased to support the conference again this year with our global network and our German centres for research, science and innovation, to bring excellent, young researchers to Berlin,"
- DAAD President Prof. Dr. Margret Wintermantel.

The 2019 Biennial Symposium of the Australian & New Zealand Associations of von Humboldt Fellows
|
|
"Knowledge needs to be shared to be meaningful"
From the 22-24th of November at Macquarie University, we were fortunate to be invited to take part in the 2019 Biennial Symposium of the Australian (AAvHF) and New Zealand (NZAvHF) Associations of von Humboldt Fellows!
With the aim to rethink what "sharing knowledge" means in today's modern and globalised society, a variety of speakers from Australia, New Zealand & Germany took to the stage to present their work and insights onto the matter. Specifically, the high-powered interdisciplinary event addressed pressing challenges of research communication, dissemination and impact.
The DAAD Australia's Director Katharina McGrath also took to the stage to present key information on the DAAD, including who we are, our Sydney IC, and the range of research and funding opportunities that are available to these dedicated researchers.
Taking place exactly 250 years since the birth of Alexander von Humboldt, participants also took the opportunity to celebrate Humboldt's legacy, and learn more about collaboration and research funding opportunities available in Germany.

In Celebration of 30 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall -
Inauguration of a Rare Piece of Wall
|
|
"JEDER HAT KRAFT" - Everyone is Powerful
To the amazement of many, a rare and 4m high piece of the Berlin Wall was hidden in a Blacktown warehouse for almost 17 years, left behind by its former owner.
Kindly donated by the current warehouse owner, Raymound Chim, this rare piece of the Berlin Wall started to receive much attention from the media, including Channel 10 AU, the ABC and Deutsche Welle (DW).
Sonja Griegoschewski, Director of the Goethe-Institut Australia, negotiated with Woollahra Council to permanently place the item in-front of the Heritage Building of the Goethe-Institut and the DAAD IC in Sydney.
After successful planning, the official
inauguration took place on the 23rd of November, with a variety of fellow guests attending - including tourists, Sydneysiders and visitors from Germany. Also in attendance was a range of notable figures including the Consulate General of Germany in Sydney, the Mayor of Woollahra, Counselors and former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Woollahra Mayor Susan Wynne remarks,
“What once symbolised division is now a symbol of what brings us together. Having a piece of the Berlin Wall installed in Woollahra on the 30th anniversary of such an iconic event is an important reminder to us not to take for granted the peace and freedom we enjoy."
