Sea King Sunday Update

Dear Sea King Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend! I had the special opportunity to receive an advanced copy of the yearbook and all I can say is WOW! As I flipped through the pages this morning, my heart grew with pride as I looked at everything our students, staff, and school community have accomplished this year. The yearbook is always a reminder to me that PVHS is a one-of-a-kind, highly spirited, amazing high school with so many unique and interesting students. This book is a labor of love from Mrs. Kostrencich and her students as they work to capture a full year of our Sea King community in one publication, and this edition is one of the best I have seen. I know our student body is going to be so impressed by this magnificent book when they receive it later this week! If you see our yearbook staff and Mrs. Kostrencich on campus, be sure to thank them for a job well done!

This is our last regular week of the 22-23 school year. The week of June 5th, we will head into finals week and then graduation for our Class of 2023! We are almost at the finish line Sea Kings. Let's finish strong and enjoy these final two weeks of the school year.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Trista Ramirez

Principal

A Special Class of Seniors

This week's Student Spotlight goes out to the 2023 Senior Class. This past week, Senior Week, was an incredibly fun and sometimes emotional week at PVHS, where we got to celebrate the seniors as they enter their last two weeks in high school. Every day was filled with activities and events designed to honor our fabulous graduating class of 2023 as they go on to their next adventure.

The week started with seniors wearing their future college apparel for I Declare Day, where students took pictures with other seniors attending their same future college. It continued into the night with seniors coming back to school for a picnic and games at Senior Sunset. On Wednesday the Senior Class took a trip to Disneyland and California Adventure for Senior Disney Day, where the happiest place on Earth got a little bit happier with the Sea Kings in town. On Thursday was one of the most competitive and loud Class Comps ever, with the competition between PVHS classes in games of spirit and skill, with the seniors just edging out the Juniors and Sophomores by a point each in the final standings. Finally, the Lip Dub on Friday got the whole school involved as every Sea King sang along to Call Me Maybe, I've Got a Feeling, and Dancing Queen as the camera moved through the halls highlighting all of our amazing students and programs.

A very special thank you to the incredible, Mrs. Maxfield, for organizing and leading all of the Senior Week events. You are an irreplaceable asset to PV High.

Seniors, we hope you had a week you'll never forget and we are proud to highlight you as a fantastic senior class!

Girl Up and CSF team up for a cause!

Girl Up and CSF teamed up to collect 221 pairs of shoes for Shoes for Athletes, a local non-profit organization. Their mission is to provide athletic shoes for the less fortunate in an effort to encourage and enhance their experience in sports. Through the lens students tackled topics such as California lifestyles, architecture, street photography, abandonment, denial, artificial vs reality, minimalism, femininity, and the effects of water on mental health. Each presentation introduces their artistic selves and explains the project's approach to their topic.

Sea King Athletic Teams Continue to Dominate in the Spring

It has been a banner season for our spring programs!

The Sea Kings wrapped up team league titles in Baseball, Boys Golf, and Boys Lacrosse! Our playoff teams made deep playoff runs highlighted by a Boys Golf 3rd place finish in CIF and Girls Lacrosse bringing home a CIF Runner-Up plaque. It was also exciting to see our Girls Beach Volleyball team advance to the CIF Quarterfinals in the first ever CIF playoff for that sport. We hosted a two-day baseball playoff game that went down as one of the longest in CIF history, so long that we had to stop due to darkness.

We have also seen great individual achievements from our athletes that have advanced deep into playoff competition.

Will Lokier competed in the CIF tennis singles quarterfinals

Henry Carr advanced to the CIF Individual Golf Tournament

Daniel Sung (Track & Field) took 2nd place in CIF in the 100m

Alex Naehu (Track & Field) took 3rd place in CIF in the 800m

Sung, Brennan Shall, Cam Gherardi, and David Winged combined to break the school record and finish 3rd place in CIF in the 4x100m relay.

Hillary Nguyen broke a school record in the 100yd breast stroke for our swim team!

We also saw the Beach Volleyball pair of Meg Walsh and Mallory LaBreche have a great showing in the first CIF Beach Volleyball pairs tournament.

Team Finishes by sport:

Baseball: Bay League Champs, CIF 1st Round

Girls Beach Volleyball: 3rd in Bay League, CIF Quarterfinals

Boys Golf: Bay League Champs, 3rd in CIF

Boys Lacrosse: Bay League Champs, CIF Quarterfinals

Girls Lacrosse: 3rd in Bay League, CIF Runner Up

Softball: 6th in Bay League

Boys Swimming & Diving: 4th in Bay League, 9th in CIF

Girls Swimming & Diving: 5th in Bay League, 19th in CIF

Boys Tennis: 2nd in Bay League, CIF Quarterfinals

Boys Track & Field: 4th in Bay League, 11th in CIF

Girls Track & Field: 6th in Bay League, 25th in CIF

Boys Volleyball: 4th in Bay League

We are so proud of all of our athletes and teams and coaches and support groups. Congratulations on a great Spring season!

Library's Edible Literature Festival!

The PVHS Library is hosting an Edible Literature Festival! To participate, construct an edible representation of some aspect of a text you have read (even better if read this year!). It may recreate the cover, but even better if it depicts or interprets: an event, a symbol or theme, a character, or something besides the cover. Please type a brief but thoughtful explanation of your entry (including the author, title, & category) to help the judges interpret it. You may bake from scratch or start store-bought and decorate. Please be sure your entry is both edible and appetizing!

ENTRIES DUE TO THE LIBRARY THIS TUESDAY, MAY 30

Categories:

Considered criteria:

Biology Honors Pilot Textbook Update

During this past school year, the high school Biology Honors course piloted the following curricular materials to align with the California state standards:

1st semester (August – December 2022) pilot textbook:

Science Dimensions Biology. The Living Earth. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2020.

2nd semester (January 2023 – March 2023) pilot textbook:

Mader, Sylvia and Windelspecht, Michael. Essentials of Biology, 6th Edition. McGraw Hill Education, 2021.

Throughout the pilot, information was posted on the district website for the school community to review and publisher materials were on display at the district office and available at the school for public preview.  In addition, parents of students in the pilot courses had the opportunity to provide feedback via survey at the conclusion of the pilot period.

After thorough evaluation, teaching, and analysis of the pilot textbooks, teachers and staff recommended McGraw Hill Education’s Essentials of Biology, 6th Edition, 2021, for adoption.

However, the publisher recently informed PVPUSD that the 6th edition (along with its digital components) would be replaced with a 7th edition making the 6th edition cost prohibitive.  The publisher also stated that they could not guarantee access to the 6th edition’s digital materials for the duration of the adoption.

As such, our teachers have reviewed the 7th edition and have confirmed that it has minimal changes from the 6th edition.  Accordingly, PVPUSD would like to recommend the 7th edition for adoption and invite you to preview this textbook.  Print copies will be available at each high school and the district office; for your convenience, online access (until June 8) is provided below:
