Winter Scouting Adventures!
San Marino Troops 351 B and G recently traveled to Ely, Minnesota, to participate in the Okpik Cold Weather Camping program, which is Northern Tier High Adventure camp’s winter offering. Okpik (Ook’pick) is the Inuit word for “snowy owl,” which is the Okpik course mascot. Led by their Interpreter Gavin Fox, they experienced a true Northwoods winter: learning how to thrive in subzero temperatures, pack their gear onto pulks, or sleds, travel across frozen wilderness lakes and construct sleeping structures out of snow, called quinzes, sleep “cowboy style” without a tent in -9 degrees (-28 degrees with the wind chill factor). The dog sled ride with retired dogs of the Iditarod was definitely the crew’s favorite activity!
