How Do You Know Where a Fish Goes?

Blacktip shark

A pioneering study by Charles E. Schmidt College of Science researchers and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center used a new movement model that improves the accuracy of acoustic tracking in marine animals. Results of the study, published in the journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution, demonstrate how researchers can apply these techniques and measure the accuracy and precision of the methods to their study sites. Read more.

Our approach could significantly reduce gaps in data collection and improve the reliability of ecological insights,” said Beth Bowers, Ph.D., senior author and a post-doctoral researcher at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, who conducted the research as a Ph.D. student with her mentor, Stephen Kajiura, Ph.D., in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. “Importantly, this method doesn’t rely on costly field techniques such as motorboat towed tests, which makes it suitable for large-scale studies across diverse habitats."

FAU Sea Turtle Experts Provide 'Best Practices' During Nesting Season

Sea turtle nesting season is a busy time for biologists, wildlife management and others as they eagerly await signs of turtle movement in the sand. However, for many vulnerable and endangered sea turtle species, survival is an uphill battle. Internationally renowned Schmidt College of Science researchers in the Department of Biological Sciences, Sarah L. Milton, Ph.D., chair and professor, and Jeanette Wyneken, Ph.D., professor, provide “best practices” and answer some of the most frequently asked questions to help protect Florida’s nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings. Read more.

FAU's J.A. Scott Kelso, Ph.D., Awarded Prestigious Global Chair

J.A. Scott Kelso, Ph.D., the Glenwood and Martha Creech Eminent Scholar Chair in Science and founder of FAU’s Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, has been awarded a prestigious Global Chair by the University of Bath, which is ranked No. 6 best university in the United Kingdom. Read more.

I am profoundly grateful for the honor bestowed upon me from the University of Bath and for the tremendous opportunities I will encounter as Global Chair to enhance research and establish important collaborations and interactions between our two institutions,” said Kelso. “Understanding complex systems and solving the problems that confront humanity on many levels involves ground-breaking research that requires new concepts, methods and tools."

2024 Golberg Scholarship Winners Announced

Congratulations to Charles E. Schmidt College of Science students Sadine Al-Farauki and Seymour Haque who have been named the 2024 recipients of the Golberg Scholarship. The scholarship provides additional support for pre-health track students who plan to pursue careers in the medical and health professions. Read more.

“I am passionate about further advancing the quality and understanding of women’s health,” shared Al- Farauki. “I believe that this topic is under-researched, and I am happy to dedicate my time to it and hopefully make some breakthroughs in the field.”

U-Ride: Transforming Transit for College Students in Southeast Florida

Florida Atlantic University is leading a first-time transportation collaboration with the Kresge Foundation, Daruma Tech, Broward College, Palm Beach State College, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (Tri-Rail), Palm Tran, and Broward County Transit to improve Southeast Florida’s transit ecosystem for college students and ultimately student success and retention. Read more.

“The data we collect from U-Ride can help us to improve the transit system over time and ensure that major transportation investments made by universities as well as government agencies are benefitting the greatest number of students,” said John Renne, Ph.D., principal investigator and an associate professor in FAU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning within FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

'Fit2Drive' Transforms Assessing Older Drivers With Cognitive Decline

As the world’s population ages, so does the proportion of older drivers on the road. Safe driving requires adequate memory, perceptual and motor skills, and executive function abilities. With the help of an evidence-based calculator called “Fit2Drive,” researchers from FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science have made it easy to administer and evaluate an in-office test to predict an older individual’s probability of passing an on-road driving test. Read more.

Biohybrid Robotic Hand Will Help Unravel Complex Sensation of Touch

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, in collaboration with FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and College of Medicine, and the University of Utah, have developed a biohybrid neuro-prosthetic research platform comprised of a dexterous artificial hand electrically interfaced with biological neural networks. Results of the study, published in the journal Biomimetics, demonstrate that the robotic and neuronal behavior of this biohybrid neuro-prosthetic hand model is sensitive to different neural stimulation encoding methods and can integrate robotic tactile sensations within the motor control of an artificial hand. Read more.

Video: 'White Holes: Inside the Horizon' Lecture by Carlo Rovelli, Ph.D.

Acclaimed physicist and New York Times bestselling author Carlo Rovelli, Ph.D., visited us to explore the mysteries of where matter goes in the depths of a black hole in his talk, "White Holes: Inside the Horizon." Join Dr. Rovelli on a journey where space and time cease to exist in his recent lecture, hosted by the Department of Physics. Watch video. Read more.

Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellow Studies Effects of Bilingualism on the Brain

Meet Merike Lang, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, who investigates the neuroprotective effects of bilingualism on normal and abnormal aging. Her presentation, "Longitudinal Cognitive Changes and Brain Biomarkers in Bilingual Hispanics/Latinos with MCI [Mild Cognitive Impairment]: Preliminary Analyses," won the Lightning Presentation Round at the Alzheimer's Association's recent Latinos and Alzheimer's Symposium in San Diego.
