FAU Experts Predict a Highly Active 2024 Hurricane Season | As temperatures heat up this summer, U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coast residents are bracing for what could be an unprecedented 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. The very likely arrival of a La Niña weather pattern combined with unusually warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean could provide prime conditions for a supercharged season. Experts encourage new and seasoned residents alike to make and follow a hurricane plan now and have appropriate supplies ready. Read more.
“High-intensity storms bring strong winds and large waves that can cause severe coastal erosion and damage structures and infrastructure, such as homes and roads,” explained Tiffany Roberts Briggs, Ph.D., chair, associate professor, and director of the Coastal Studies Lab in the Department of Geosciences, Schmidt College of Science. “When coupled with storm surge, the impacts can be devastating. This is problematic because many coastal communities are densely populated, such as here in South Florida.”
FAU Researcher Lands Grant for Personalized Cancer Radiation Therapy
Wazir Muhammad, Ph.D., principal investigator and an assistant professor in the Department of Physics within Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, has received a $701,000 grant from Precess Medical Derivatives, Inc., for a project that aims to revolutionize cancer treatment by making it more personalized and effective. The study, “Deciphering Digital Twins of Cancer Patients for Personalized Treatments,” will employ artificial intelligence, specifically deep reinforcement learning, to analyze multimodal data, improving cancer characterization and treatment for better patient outcomes. Read more.
“In oncology or medical applications, deep reinforcement learning can be used to optimize treatment strategies by learning from patient data and adapting treatment plans based on observed outcomes,” said Muhammad. “It also can aid in personalizing treatments by considering individual patient characteristics and predicting the effectiveness of different interventions.”
