Sciatica 101
Sciatica is one of the most common types of pain. As many as 40% of the population will experience sciatica at some time in their life. Sciatica is pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain radiating from the back, buttock and down one or both legs. It's usually caused when a bulging disc or bone spur in the spine presses on the nerve, or if there is local inflammation. The pain can be dull, aching or even sharp. Some people will also experience numbness, tingling and weakness if the sciatica isn't treated.
How does physical therapy help treat sciatica?
While medications may help decrease pain, physical therapy can reduce sciatic compression by carefully introducing exercises and individualized treatments. Your physical therapist will perform a detailed evaluation in order to create and implement your program, based on your individual needs. We will work with you in the clinic and you'll be given a home exercise program. You can refer to your home program later if you should have a flare up. Therapists will also give you tips on proper body mechanics and instructions based on your deficits and activity level. Our goal is to get you independent in managing your condition.
