Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL Families,

In case you haven’t heard OLOL is celebrating the start of summer with the OLOL Bounce into Summer event this Saturday. I would appreciate it, if all of our school families could attend Mass on Saturday at 4:30PM and then stick around for an evening of fun; including a food truck, bounce house, yard games, four square, kickball, and so much more. We have invited all of the 25 or so new families that will be starting their OLOL educational journey. Having our existing school families show up in force is a great way to show our school pride and a way to thank the OLOL Parish for all of their support. Please plan on attending and having a great evening.

We would love to have a full church choir at the Saturday night Mass as well. Please let Mrs. Lewis or myself know if you can sing in the church choir. Please consider sharing your talents.

Would you like a new MAC-Pro laptop? If you bring a new family that has an interest in OLOL, you can be entered in a drawing for a new laptop. Please bring any family that wants to learn about OLOL to this Saturday night event.

The end of the school year is fast approaching. We have a few events that I wanted to make you aware of. The annual OLOL Awards Assembly is Thursday, May 26th at 1:00PM, grades 3rd-8th attend as we celebrate the accomplishments of our students. The 8th graders' last day is Friday, May 27th.

X-Fun day is Tuesday, May 31st at 1:00PM. The last day for students is Thursday, June 2nd with an 11:00AM dismissal.

In next week’s Lourdes Letter I will provide an update on staffing for next year.

“When you have a really bad day, try and treat the world better than it treated you.” - Patrick Stump

Counselor's Corner

Mrs. Kielpikowski

Hello everyone!  We are in the final two weeks of school!  It has been an amazing first year here for me.  I am truly blessed to be part of the GRACE school system!

Here are a few things the students have been learning in my classes.  Self-confidence and liking ourselves for who God designed us to be has been part of our lessons. Part of these lessons were acceptance of others as well as celebrating our uniqueness.  Also, we focused on ending the year strong and getting ready for the next year.  We looked at things we can improve on to be the best student we can be.

This website https://www.commonsensemedia.org/   has a wealth of great information in regards to technology use, safety, privacy and parental controls to name a few.  There is a section specifically for parents called Parents Need to Know.  You can also select topics by specific age ranges.

In search of items

I am always looking to expand my counseling tools to enhance my program.  If you have any of the items below that your  family no longer needs, I would be happy to put them to use at school.  Thanks!

  • Board games
  • Card games
  • Playdough
  • Legos, blocks
  • Books

I use the above items to teach social skills, cooperation, problem solving along with books that contain a message on feelings, character development, friendship to name a few.

OLOL Facebook Page (Parents)

A group of parents have created a Facebook group for OLOL parents. It is called OLOL Catholic School DePere - Parents.

It is a private Facebook group and is being administered by parents. You will need to be approved to join it, as an OLOL parent.

The hope is that parents can use this page as a way to ask some simple questions quickly, share pictures and things going on at school.

If you have questions or concerns about school, please contact OLOL staff and administration; not this Facebook page. A priority of Fr. Jim's Lourdes 200 is building a strong community and this Facebook page is geared toward that goal.

OLOL staff will continue to maintain the OLOL School Facebook page. We ask that you continue to follow and like the school Facebook page.

If you have any questions please contact the school office.

News from the Classroom

Computer Science for All (CSForAll)

UNPLUGGED: Hands-on activities are great ways to learn, which is a critical component in Science labs with Mrs. Johnson.

Recently, the sixth graders took a "field trip" to our playground to identify simple machines we use everyday.

Then, they designed playgrounds to show the six different types of simple machines - lever, wedge, inclined plane, screw, pulley, and wheel and axle.

They were very creative and each group designed a fun place to see simple machines in action.

Wouldn't it be fun to use one of these as a playground prototype?

Computer Science activities require planning before the hands-on work.  Great job sixth graders!

ELECTIVE Class for Middle School: Robotics using Legos NXT

Step 1; Build It

Step 2: Test and demonstrate the sensors.  What do they do?  How to program?

Step 3:  Create a challenge for your robot

Step 4: Analyze what is working, how to change it, program using the desktop software and test, try, change and try again.   What happens when we do this?

CSForAll Standards:

Power Standard DA2: Students will recognize and define data in computational problems. (CESA 7)

Computational Thinker (ISTE)

Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.

Empowered Learner (ISTE)

Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Summer Tutoring

Hello OLOL Families!

Believe it or not the year is rapidly coming to an end!  During the summer months I offer 1-on-1 tutoring services. I generally meet with students for one hour  2-3 times each week in their homes or childcare settings, however, I am flexible.

If you are interested in summer tutoring for your child, and would like more information please message me at jmjohnson@gracesystem.org.

Happy Spring!
