Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL Families,

Welcome to the season of Lent.  I hope that the whole OLOL Community spends time in prayer and reflection during these next 40 days.  I look forward to the Lent Season as I make it a priority for me to spend time with the Lord and listen to what He is expecting of me.  What kind of person does He want me to be?  What changes can I make to be a more faithful person who is able to spread the Gospel values that will make a better world for the individuals that make up my life.

If you haven’t done so, please take a moment to log in any volunteer hours that you completed so far.  You can enter them HERE.  My hope is that we can let you know where you stand as we have two upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Those opportunities are also great community building events so I hope that we see all of OLOL families either volunteering or participating.  The Lenten Dinner is Friday, April 1st from 4:30 - 7:00.  We are offering both drive-thru or dine-in dinners.  The 8th grade School Carnival will also be held in the gym.  We hope to see you there.

Trivia Night is Friday, April 22nd from 6:30-10:00 at the Green Bay Distillery.  This is one of my favorite events as I love using knowledge that I acquired and it only benefits me during these types of events.  For those who are new, you look to get together a group of 8 and reserve a table.  The table can consist of grade levels teams, co-workers, or family.  Your table has a theme and participates in several rounds of answering trivia questions.  I guarantee that you will have an enjoyable evening.

We have some exciting enrollment news.  Our 4 year-old preschool enrollment reached capacity and had a waitlist after only 3 weeks of enrollment.  We are going to add another section so we can grow that program over the spring and summer.  This is great news for OLOL and wish to thank all of the folks that have done a great job of recruiting for school.  It brings a smile to my face thinking that we can bring the OLOL experience to many more students.

Please don't forget that OLOL has a referral program.  If you refer a student or family to OLOL, you will receive a $250 tuition credit.  Please reach out to me if you have any questions on this program.  You can benefit by helping us grow enrollment.

“To a great extent the world is what we make it. We get back what we give.  If we sow hate, we reap hate; if we scatter love and gentleness we harvest love and happiness. Other people are like a mirror which reflects back on us the kind of image we cast.  The kind person bears with the infirmities of others, never magnifies trifles, and avoids a spirit of fault finding.” - Bishop Fulton Sheen

Wisconsin Tax Deduction for Tuition Expense

Tax legislation signed into law gives Wisconsin taxpayers the opportunity to deduct private school tuition expenses from their taxable income. A subtraction from income is allowed for tuition expenses that are paid for any of the GRACE schools. Parents/guardians are eligible for a maximum deduction of $4,000 per child in grades K-8 and $10,000 per child in grades 9-12. Students transitioning from eighth to ninth grade are eligible for both deductions. Per state guidance, any amount spent on tuition and book fees are eligible for the deduction. Book fees include digital books, such as laptops or tablet fees issued by the school.

Tuition tax credit information is available to GRACE families online via GRACE’s enrollment management system, TADS. The TADS Household Paid Tuition Tax Report will provide a breakdown of payments made for the specified household’s tuition account during the tax year.

When gathering information for tax preparation, GRACE families are to access their TADS account | select Billing | Billing Account Number | Reports | Household Paid Tuition Tax Report | enter the tax year (i.e. 2021) and submit. If you have questions or require assistance, please call TADS Family Support at (800) 477-8237.

Additional information regarding Tax Deduction is available https://gracesystem.org/admissions/tuition-assistance/

Enrollment: Parish Verification Form

Enrollment for 2022-23 is off to a very brisk pace, and we are pleased many of you have re-enrolled.  We have already created waitlists for a few grades at some of our schools.

As reviewed in my January letter to you, new to the enrollment process for students in grades K through 10 this year is the Parish Verification Form.

This new process supports the meaningful relationship between our families and our GRACE parishes in harmony with our mission of growing in our Catholic faith.  This process also recognizes our GRACE parishes who significantly support our schools through their financial investments.

  • Families enroll K-10 students with the Standard Rate of tuition in our TADS.com enrollment management system.
  • After enrollment, families are to complete - with their GRACE parish - the Parish Verification Form. Upon receipt of verification, the family’s TADS Billing Account will be adjusted to the Active Parishioner Rate (lower rate).
  • Your parish office will help guide you through the process of obtaining their verification.  Our parishes define what ‘active parishioner’ means in each parish.
  • The Parish Verification Form and instructions are provided during the online enrollment process in TADS.  Information is also available at gracesystem.org | Admissions | Parish Verification Form.
  • Please submit your completed Form which includes verification by your parish representative to GRACE Riverside Office by June 1, 2022.  Tuition payments for 2022-23 begin in July annually.  Submission instructions are on the Form.
  • Completed verification forms will be processed in batches at regular intervals.  Each family will receive an email when their Form is processed and their TADS Billing Account is adjusted.

Please be sure you enroll your K-10 students fully and then complete the Parish Verification Form with your parish.

If you have not already re-enrolled, we encourage you to do so to ensure your child’s seat for fall 2022 and to take advantage of the lower enrollment fee (now $100 until March 1st). Early re-enrollment also allows us to plan resources including staffing for next school year; preparations are already underway!

God bless!

News from the Classroom

Counselor's Corner

Happy March! Spring is just around the corner. It is hard to believe we are ⅔ of the way through school.

Here are some topics we have been covering in my classroom lessons. In the month of February, we have spent some time on problem solving/conflict resolution. With the younger students, we learned the difference between big deals where you need an adult’s help or little deals which are things they can problem solve on their own. Middle elementary talked about strategies to help keep conflict from escalating. I have found sometimes simply telling the person how you feel is helpful. Often, when I talk to students, they have not told the other person what was bothering them.

Here is a helpful link for parents to talk about difficult subjects with their kids. With the situation in the Ukraine and other events that arise, sometimes it is hard to know what to say to kids. This website has some helpful suggestions. Click here.

Finally, next week the 8th graders are going to a Career Exploration event at the KI Convention Center. They will get to talk to local businesses and learn about the careers the people do there. Looking forward to helping chaperone this field trip!

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have a concern with your child that I may be able to help with. I am available at Our Lady of Lourdes Tuesdays and Thursdays and other days by email.

Fang Reading Club -- Reading to Home Plate!

Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade can once again have fun playing “baseball” by reading through the bases. After they read 200 minutes at home, within a two week period, they will slide onto a “base.” That’s only 20 minutes a day! Every two weeks they can read their way onto the next base by reading 200 more minutes. Then, hopefully they will make a “homerun” on March 11th.

Students who make it to home plate are rewarded with a free hot dog and drink, and a ticket to the OLOL Family Night game with the Timber Rattlers on Friday, May 6, 2022.

We hope all students in grades K-5 will “step up to the plate” and join in the fun! Look for more information on Fang Reading Club sheets below. If you have any questions, please contact your teacher or Ms. J. Johnson.

Computer Science for All

Computer Science

Coding in the Classroom

The 5th graders are creating Sprites, which are 2-dimensional images that are part of a scene. As they advance thru the coding, they are practicing coding text and prompts with loops and variables. This is being done with Course F of code.org.

Our 6th graders are putting their Sprites into Action with mazes, art, a variety of loops, nested loops, conditionals, if/then, functions and variables. They are working on components of an Express course of code.org.

Our 7th & 8th graders are working on a unit of Computer Science Discoveries. In this unit, they code program animations, interactive art and games. They will experience some programming concepts that computer scientists use daily.

Code.org is only one component of our Computer Science curriculum, but provides everyone an opportunity to be a programmer!

Our Lady of Lourdes School continues to develop our Computer Science curriculum.

This week, the OLOL CS4All team met with CESA7 and other schools who are developing their Computer Science curriculum. A topic we discussed during today's session was learning about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the school and work environment.

We have been working on the SCRIPT process for 18 months and have made great progress with our computer science curriculum, but there is much more we would like/need to do.

This week our team was working with school districts: Seymour, Pulaski and St. Francis Xavier.

The OLOL CS4All team meets monthly and consists of Mrs. Christensen, Mrs. Fink, Mrs. Sharon Johnson and Mr. Young.

If you are interested in learning more about this program or would like to share your technology work experiences with our students, please contact us.
