Note from Liz and Trish

Happy New Year! We have been reflecting in these opening days of 2024 on the extraordinary efforts and successes of school communities who worked collectively and creatively through the fall to support their staff, students, and families and created the best learning environments possible.

We thank you for sharing your stories at our monthly coffee chats and look forward to continuing to come together as a professional community of sharing through the spring. We hope you'll join us for our next School Support Network Meeting “Using SEL to See and Connect Beyond Disruptive Behaviors” (details in the teal column).

“Using SEL to See and Connect Beyond Disruptive Behaviors”

Register Now

Years following the return to the classroom after the Covid-19 shutdowns, educators across the country are still struggling with the aftermath of the pandemic. One of the major concerns facing teachers, counselors and administrators alike is student behavior. SEL continues to be one of the most powerful tools to effectively address behavioral challenges and prepare students for life inside and outside of the classroom. The question for many is “With so many different aspects of SEL, where should my focus be in order to reduce disruptive behaviors within the school community?”

This interactive session will provide insight and understanding into disruptive behaviors; identify three specific SEL areas to promote positive behavior; and highlight best practices to develop the skills and climate for students to regulate themselves.

"All Students Need to Matter: How to Foster Their Mattering and Positive Purpose"

Register Now

Whether or not SEL and character-related interventions have the desired impact on students turns out to depend on the connection of the use of skills or the adherence to core values to students’ sense of mattering and purpose. We will discuss how to develop students sense of positive purpose and mattering, its connection to youth voice and classroom and school climate, and how and why some students choose to act out against self or others in pursuit of mattering through a negative purpose.

Presented by: Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Rutgers University; Director, Rutgers Social-Emotional and Character Development Lab; Co-Director, Academy for Social-Emotional Learning in Schools

SEL Day 2024

5th Annual SEL Day

March 8, 2024

Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Leaders

SEL Day is a global, grassroots campaign for social-emotional learning to support children’s academic recovery, mental health, and well-being. Since its inception in 2020, #SELday has reached over 40 million views. Join us toward a shared goal: better school, work, and life opportunities for all students.

In 2023, over 4,000 SEL champions representing all 50 U.S. and 87 countries made 11,000 commitments to showcase, promote, advocate, and support SEL. Advocacy efforts have resulted in SEL Day proclamations in fifteen states, a letter of support from the White House, and a bipartisan resolution for SEL Week introduced in the Senate.

Make your commitment today to showcase SEL in your community, promote SEL to your personal and professional networks, advocate SEL with your policymakers, and support SEL in your local schools, organizations, and community.

Input Needed for SEL App

Hello educators!

We are a team of the Social-Emotional and Character Development Lab at Rutgers University, directed by Professor Maurice Elias. We are in the process of creating an app for educators, like yourself, to have the ability to access SEL resources at your fingertips and get your implementation concerns met! We are currently seeking input from educators on what is most important to you in an SEL app. Our goal is to integrate these suggestions from you, as those charged with carrying out SEL, and create an app that can support SEL needs inside and outside of the classroom.

We invite you to contribute in one of two valuable ways:

  1. Through participating in an online interview by scheduling here
  2. Completing a brief survey

We appreciate your assistance!
