Meet Sofia's New Dissertation Assistant, Kailer Miller

"When I was in kindergarten, I was convinced I was going to grow up and become a “Person who helps others solve their problems peacefully” vs. a firefighter or a teacher. Now that I am a mom to four, I have learned that my passion is less about peace (4 kids, remember, so it’s peaceful only when they sleep) and more about how we get up after life serves us happenings that maybe aren’t “peaceful”. I am a lover of humanity and all its brokenness. It is in our brokenness that we have a great opportunity to rebuild. My motto is: be the type of person you want to see in the world.

I am a Master of Art in Counseling Psychology student, in my first quarter. Every day I am one step closer to actualizing my dream of becoming an MFT, but I won’t stop there. I will be continuing on and getting my PhD with my dissertation topic around healing trauma through art. I recently finished writing a book titled, Am I Changed? It is a memoir about a therapeutic boarding school.

I can relate to most of you in this program because I know how it feels to pour your heart and soul into a project and have it materialized into words on a page. I am here to support you on your path through your dissertation process, from FORMS to a reminder that you can do it. I support you!"

Q&A
What is 'Science, Soul and Death' about?

The chapter addresses the provocative questions surrounding death. What, if anything, happens after we die and how does the act of seeking answers to these questions affect our daily lives? We have been reflecting on these questions throughout history, with answers being offered from religion and philosophy. Such answers have ranged from total nihilism to eternal peace in heaven, to utter contempt for even bothering to think about such things Modern science has been relatively slow to give these types of questions the serious attention they deserve. However, some researchers, especially those who have rejected simple materialism, have begun to build bridges between ancient spiritual insights and modern scientific theory. Indeed, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the postmaterialist approach to science is leading to what, historian of science, Thomas Kuhn would refer to as a paradigm shift. But the fundamental shift is not actually in science (at least not solely within science): it is more of a philosophical shift with extraordinary implications for science, and society as a whole.

What does this mean for you and the work you're doing and how does this tie into transpersonal psychology?

At its core, transpersonal studies seek to move beyond a strictly materialistic science to embrace the full range of human experiences. Topics of death and the soul are key elements of a transpersonal perspective. The goal of this study is to examine a post-materialistic science about death to help transform fear and anxiety about death to hope and curiosity. The chapter offers a philosophical approach to science, calling for a paradigm shift that fundamentally embraces the transpersonal. This includes near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences, and reports of past lives. Is there a place for these experiences in our paradigm of reality? The transpersonal approach says yes.
COVID-19 Update
Face Mask 1
As Sofia continues to monitor the developments surrounding the pandemic, we would like to announce that we are actively pursuing a goal to return to a normal on-campus experience with in-person classes, seminars, and intensives this fall.

The rapid progress of vaccines presents hope and promise as we look toward the light at what has been a long and difficult tunnel.

If you would like to share thoughts, opinions, or suggestions to assist in making the transition a smooth one, please email studentservices@sofia.edu. We appreciate any and all input during this time.
