Respecting Nature
Late Summer is a time of celebrating the abundance of Nature. As we enjoy the Late Summer heat and spend more time outdoors, it is WiSE to consider the Leave No Trace 7 Principles™. Leave No Trace © is a global non-profit dedicated to promoting responsible outdoor recreation. Their 7 principles are:
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare: Thoughtful preparation allows you to enter the wilderness with a sense of purpose and respect. When you anticipate the challenges of the natural world, you minimize your impact and help maintain the environment’s pristine condition.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces: Choosing the right surfaces for travel and camping is a commitment to preserving the land. By staying on durable terrain, you protect the delicate balance of nature and ensure that others can experience it as you have.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly: Proper waste disposal is a simple but vital practice that honors the land. Carrying out all waste ensures that the natural world remains unspoiled, allowing it to thrive for generations to come.
4. Leave What You Find: Nature's treasures are meant to be observed, not taken. By leaving what you find, you preserve the essence of the wilderness, allowing others to experience its untouched beauty.
5. Minimize Campfire Impact: While fire connects us to the wild, it must be used with caution. Minimizing campfire impact is about respecting the land’s fragility, ensuring that your presence doesn’t leave a permanent scar on the environment.
6. Respect Wildlife: Respect for wildlife is foundational to our coexistence with nature. Observing animals without interference allows them to thrive, maintaining the natural balance that is essential for a healthy ecosystem.
7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors: Being mindful of others in the wilderness is a reflection of our respect for shared spaces. By maintaining a considerate presence, you contribute to a peaceful and respectful environment for all who seek solace in nature.
