Tools and Tips to Help Your Teen Get Organized

Being disorganized can cause a great deal of stress for some kids. With the right tools — and the right support — they can build the skills they need to overcome organizational challenges, get better at managing their time, stop losing things, and start feeling more in control.

The problem is, that for many - especially those with executive functioning issues orADHD — figuring out how to get (and stay) organized isn’t as simple as “trying harder.” It requires new strategies.

Organization isn’t a superpower, it’s just a set of strategies and skills you don’t have yet, and acquiring them takes time, trial, error and commitment. There’s no cheat code, but you can learn, and once you do things really do get a lot easier.

Teenagers often struggle with balancing social life, studies, and extracurricular activities. Add screen time, sleep deprivation, and too much other stuff, and it is no wonder many students experience disorganization.

Teenagers tend to function in a reactive instead of proactive mode to compensate for lost time. They end up multitasking, which actually decreases effectiveness and efficiency.

Teenagers need to learn how to create customized and maintainable systems for organizing their belongings, their space, and their time, but in a way that makes sense to them. First, they must recognize and avoid time wasters, like interruptions, technology (email, social media, text messaging, etc.), perfectionism, and procrastination

Teenagers should:

  • Work in a space that enhances productivity.

    It should include:

  • A large, clear, flat space.

  • A comfortable chair.

  • Adequate lighting.

  • Filing, for archived papers and keepsakes.

  • Basic school supplies.

  • 1-2 in-boxes or letter trays to store current papers and projects.

  • To manage their time, teenagers should use a planner to record EVERYTHING, including homework assignments, projects, extracurricular activities, holidays, birthdays, and family vacations.

  • Having a planner with a monthly view gives kids a broader look at events and assignments. This is especially helpful when planning how to break down longer projects and goals

  • They should also hang a large monthly calendar at their command center and update it weekly.

Turn off technology when completing homework and projects.

Use a timer to stay focused.

Prioritize assignments & estimate the

length of each task.

**Organization is not necessarily about how a space looks, but how a space functions. Help your teenager set up their command center in a way that makes sense to them.
