Dear Friends,

Family Resource Centers are a wellspring of support for families. Our dedicated advocates assist hundreds of people every month in accessing the resources they need to support their children, secure health care, find housing and mental health services. Working families throughout the county struggle every month to make ends meet and that is why Family Service Agency and donors like you are essential to creating stable and healthy environments for those in need.

We recently sent a Summer Appeal specifically asking for gifts to help fill gaps in funding for families in poverty, for youth with mental health challenges and seniors undergoing life transitions. We urge you to support these efforts. There is always a need that can be filled by any donation made with great intention!

With gratitude,

Lisa Brabo, Ph.D.

R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Nurtures Youth Leaders

A camper's family greets him with welcome signs upon his arrival.

Families eagerly wait to meet their boys after

their 13-day life changing experience.

Last month at dawn, in front of the Santa Maria Valley Youth & Family Center, fifteen families put their middle school boys on a bus to the Kern River Valley. Thirteen days later, they picked up these boys – who looked the same, but had notably risen to the challenges of leadership, hard work and team building through an intensive program at the R.M. Pyles Boys Camp.

Nancy Johnson, Clinical Director in Santa Maria has worked with the camp, families, and boys since 1986 and is an enthusiastic advocate for the program. “Pyles Camp is for those boys who are at a bit of a fork in the road,” she said. “With the right motivation, support and challenges, they develop skills to become leaders – a tip over the fence toward positive choices is sometimes all they need.”

Pyles camp primarily looks for boys from low-income families living in challenging environments who would benefit from a multi-year summer wilderness camp experience supplemented by year-round mentoring and exposure to male role models. Participants are referred by FSA Outreach Mentors, school counselors and teachers.

Gail Burgess, Outreach Mentor Program Manager, sums up her process, “When I recommend boys for the camp, I look for boys that are trustworthy, kind and are deserving of this privilege. Their teachers or I see potential in them.”

FSA Joins Discussion on Lompoc Youth Wellness and Safety Initiatives

Will Fuller and Samuel Duarte (back right) join Joan Hartmann alongside 10+ stakeholders on Wednesday, July 19th at the Veteran’s Memorial Building.

Last week, FSA and LHP leadership, Will Fuller and Samuel Duarte attended Supervisor Joan Hartmann's Lompoc Youth Wellness and Safety Leadership Meeting alongside additional stakeholders to discuss current resources and additional support that can be provided to youth.

"I had the opportunity to update partners on our community engagement work. All in all, the meeting gave me a better understanding of Lompoc resources, strengths and challenges," said Samuel Duarte.

This meeting not only provided FSA the opportunity to share programs and services we provide to children and families in Lompoc, but also fostered connections with partners. We all gained insight into how we can continue to grow with the community and its needs.
