Call for Nominations: SaskCulture Board of Directors | |
SaskCulture is seeking talented, dynamic, conscientious and energetic individuals interested in volunteering to assist in the cultural development of Saskatchewan. SaskCulture strives to build a culturally vibrant future in which all citizens of Saskatchewan individually and collectively celebrate, value and support participation in and access to cultural experience. The deadline for applications is May 1.
The positions open for election and the complete nominations package are available on the SaskCulture website.
| Changes on SaskCulture’s Board of Directors | Ross Grandel, originally elected in June 2022, resigned from SaskCulture’s Board of Directors in December 2022 to spend more time on other initiatives. In January 2023, the Board appointed Joanne McDonald to fill the remainder of his one-year term as a Member at Large. Joanne served on the SaskCulture Board from 2013 to 2020, including a term as chairperson from 2016 to 2018. | | |

Grants Open for Applications
Two SaskCulture grants are now open for applications, with deadlines in March.
The The Aboriginal Arts and Culture Leadership Grant supports the sharing of cultural skills and knowledge to young people through participatory cultural activity with First Nations or Métis arts and culture leaders. Apply by March 31.

Multicultural Initiatives Fund – Project Funding aims to advance cross-cultural understanding and support work that aligns with the principles of Truth and Reconciliation in Saskatchewan by supporting projects encouraging people to share, learn, appreciate and respect cultural diversity. | | |

Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month | |
The Province of Saskatchewan has declared the month of February 2023 to be Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month in the province. This year, Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples (LSSAP) is celebrating 20 years of Indigenous Storytelling though the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Project.

Celebrate International Language Day
The Saskatchewan Association of International Languages (SAIL) is hosting its 2023 International Language Day celebration on February 11 in the University of Saskatchewan campus.
This free event will be featuring cultural performances, singing, and more.

New Provincial Organization: Saskatchewan Indigenous Music Association | |
A new non-profit organization was established in January with the mission to support, promote and advocate for Saskatchewan-based Indigenous artists, groups, and music.
The Saskatchewan Indigenous Music Association is made up of individuals from across Saskatchewan with diverse experiences in the music industry, with the commitment to making continual improvement to the music community for Indigenous artists.

A recent webinar offered by Prairie Central District for Sport, Culture and Recreation invited Aaron Tootoosis, to present on the topic of Smudging Spaces. Tootoosis, a Plains Cree from Poundmaker Cree Nation, shared generously of his nehiyaw and oskapewis (helper) knowledge and teachings. The following information is condensed from that webinar. | |

The Youth Lab: Building Capacity & Collaboration Among Today's Anti-Racist Leaders
A three-day event that offers young leaders an opportunity to build skills that improve their capacity to sustain or scale their anti-racism initiatives. Youth will take part in youth-led workshops that are informed and designed by their peers. Participation in the Youth Lab is free for attendees. Travel and stay in Toronto is subsidized for up to thirty youth based on self-identified financial need.

OUT on the Land Continues To Build Two-Spirit Connections

"After wrapping up the 6th annual OUT on the Land camp, OUTSaskatoon was again reminded about the growing interest for gender-affirming spaces designed to centre Indigenous cultural teachings and ceremony. The camp, which runs in early August in Pine River, SK, welcomes Indigenous Two-Spirit, Queer, and Transgender urban and northern youth and connects them with traditional Indigenous Knowledge Keepers to participate in a four-day, culturally rich experience away from the city."
