AMERICAN BARBERSHOP DONATES HAIRCUTS TO SANTA ANA VALLEY PROM-GOERS
Thanks to the caring barbers at the American Barbershop in Downtown Santa Ana, students at Santa Ana Valley High School recently received free haircuts to look their best at the prom. Prom is May 27, 2017 and is being held at the Richard Nixon Library. This is the 3rd year that American Barbershop has donated haircuts, and the 3rd year that Friar Tux has donated tuxedos. The community also donates money for tickets and supporters recycle bottles and cans. SAUSD alumna Cynthia Zul and a sorority from UCI and the Transgeneros En Accion (Transgender in Action) group from The Center OC will be doing hair and makeup. In addition, Anaheim White House restaurant owner Bruno Serato will be donating a pasta meal for the students before prom. Special thanks to Special Education Teacher Blake Smith,  Para educator Esme Barreto, Para educator Ted Shambris, and organizer Jeanette Zook for making prom so special for these Falcons!

MIDDLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL HAS 100% GRADUATION RATE FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT YEAR

SAUSD is celebrating a significant increase of 11.5% in graduation rates over the last seven years. Middle College High School, the District's Early College High School located on the campus of Santa Ana College, has continuously had a 100% graduation rate over the same time period. The school has also consistently had a zero drop-out rate over the last seven years. "It takes a dedicated staff, students and parents, along with a focused program to allow each student fulfill their potential and see the future," said Kathy Apps, Ed.D, Principal of Middle College.

SAUSD GRADUATION RATES UP 11.5%, SURPASSING BOTH STATE AND ORANGE COUNTY AVERAGES

As the school year winds down, and students are working hard to finish their final projects and exams, SAUSD is celebrating a significant increase of 11.5% in graduation rates over the last seven years. The District has a 91.6% graduation rate, surpassing the state average of 83.2% and the county average of 90.8%. Middle College High School has a 100% graduation rate while Segerstrom High School has a 99.2% rate and Godinez Fundamental High School has a 98.3% rate. Century, Saddleback, Santa Ana, and Santa Ana Valley high schools have all made significant gains, with Saddleback leading with a 24.2% leap within the last seven years.
The District attributes the increased graduation rates to a collaborative effort districtwide and multi-faceted approach that includes: increased use of online learning to allow students to make up courses, evening school to accommodate students who must work in the daytime and who may need to make up courses, and the creation of a department that is specifically trained and focused to help students connect to programs and recapture those who may have veered off track. BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

The Santa Ana Unified School District has experienced a trend of decline in student enrollment which has caused the District to reduce its budget for the next three years. Coupled with the decline is the leveling off of State funding and uncertainty of Federal funding.

To ensure that the District is in good financial standing, the Board of Education made very difficult decisions to reduce and eliminate 154 certificated and certificated management positions and some classified and classified management positions. None of the aforementioned positions directly impacted Special Education services provided in the classroom.

The target goal to balance the budget is $24 million. As the budget is finalized, the Board and Superintendent Phillips hope that they may be able to rescind some of the positions impacted due to retirements and attrition.

The next Regular Meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at 6 p.m .
