Helping a Veteran Stay Warm this Winter!

Even before they were in style, Dennis Floyd was a champion of tiny homes. When a former TV repair shop was available for purchase in 1996, he converted the 300-square-foot building into the perfect home for him and his longtime best friend, his dog. “Back in the day, this was the hangout for men to sit outside and discuss everything from current events to the weather. The owner would fix more than TVs, anything the folks brought by – electronics of all kinds and even the occasional bicycle,” Floyd recalls.

Mr. Floyd is a proud veteran who served his country as a mechanic for three years. Following his years in the service, he was employed at a local car and tractor repair shop and then in the textile business at Burlington Industries, where he retired at age 65. He proudly displays certificates on the wall of his achievements, including his honorable discharge from the military, his retirement plaque from Burlington, and two certificates from when he won spelling B’s in the 5th and 6th grades.

Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency’s Urgent Repair Program, was able to help upfit Mr. Floyd’s home with new windows and doors. He was quickly amazed after his repair to feel the effects – he is extremely grateful for how easy it is now to heat his tiny home.

Pastor's Build Day

Thursday, March 16th

8:00 am until 1:00 pm at 200 Hatley Street

Faith leaders will join us to start the build of a new home in Aberdeen

This build continues the faith community's work in Moore County with help from our faith partners in Richmond County. Below is the a link to the testimony of pastors who will come out for this day of lifting boards, swinging hammers, and running chop saws.

We see God's love in action on our build sites. Our vision is a world where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home. Over 100 applicants pursued being a Habitat homeowner this year. We would love to have been able to build for all 100, but Habitat currently accepts only 10 to 12 families a year. This year we build 12 homes and your support of the Apostle's Build helps make this possible.

Apostles Build will continue after Pastor's Day for nine weekends, Thursday through Saturday mornings. Please check with your church's mission team or pastor to see how you can join this work. One theme in the comments by pastors is how this building is an opportunity to put your faith into action, being the hands and feet of Christ. We are grateful for your patronage in this call to action and we look forward to building with you!

Father Vincent Capodanno High School Volunteers

Every Wednesday morning, a group of students from Father Vincent Capodanno High School arrives at the Habitat ReStore after mass. They help keep our ReStore sparkling by dusting shelves, sweeping floors and hunting dust bunnies. It is part of the service component of the school’s mission. We are grateful to partner with them. The students have logged several hundred hours each year for the past few years, and their friendly faces are always a welcome addition to our ReStore.

The school’s annual fundraiser, “A Night of Courage” will be held May 6, 2023 from 5-9 pm. The evening will include keynote speaker, Michael Durant, former Army pilot involved in the “Black Hawk Down” incident as well as drinks, dinner by Mission BBQ, live music and an auction. To learn more about this event and the school, visit capodannohigh.org.
