The Board of Supervisors held a hearing on why the SFFD's ambulance system seems to go to level zero on a regular basis. While it's easy to point out the "clogged streets" and the crowded receiving hospitals, the solution is to accommodate those known delays by hiring an appropriate number of employees, staffing an appropriate number of ambulances, and allowing for a reasonable unit hour utilization that is consistent with other systems in the industry. Tweaking the schedule will not fix the problem, it will only create holes at other times of the day.

San Francisco public safety officials struggled at a hearing Thursday to explain what led to a Jan. 13 ambulance meltdown that left an apparent stroke victim waiting 21 minutes to be taken to the hospital. NBC Bay Area first reported that no ambulances were available to respond to a total of five calls on a typical Friday night in the city.
