DAG: A Piece of SBC History
|
Built in 1933, Barstow-Daggett Airport (DAG) is the oldest of our six San Bernardino County owned and operated airports. According to the
Historic American Engineering Record
by the National Park Service, four nose dock hangars were constructed in 1942 and were "designed to serve as aircraft-modification facilities, the hangar sheds could accommodate the noses (including the engines) of up to 36 aircraft at one time, which included aircrafts such as A-20s, C-47s, and P-51s.
The hangars were made of redwood and measured 1,350 feet long with a 40-foot-overhang and could accommodate the nose and engine of up to 36 aircraft, when it was fully operational. However, the utilization of these hangars was brief as the military pronounced
DAG inactive
for military duties in 1945.
Thereafter, title and maintenance was transferred between branches and agencies, but due to a fire and lost records, it is not clear who owned and was responsible for operating DAG and it's facilities until the federal government officially turned over to San Bernardino County in 1959.
Today, only one of the original four nose docks hangars remains, pictured above (2018).
