Cycling Without Age
Cycling Without Age was created to help older adults remain an active part of society and the local community with the use of trishaws. A trishaw is a Danish three-wheeled cycling bike that allows 1-2 residents to ride a bike piloted by a certified driver. These trishaws will allow our residents to experience the city and nature using volunteer 'pilots'. Thanks to grants awarded to Samaritan Bethany, private donations, and proceeds from our Golf Tournament we were able to purchase two trishaws. We have received our first trishaw and are expecting the second one in late January.

If you are interested in being a volunteer pilot, please contact Dean Stenehjem at deans@samaritanbethany.com .
iN2L
It's Never 2 Late is dedicated to helping older adults utilize the full benefits of today’s technology. The iN2L system is built on a picture-based, touch-screen interface that allows users to simply “touch” their way to find engaging, educational, spiritual and personalized content that is appropriate to their own level of ability. From enjoying mind-stimulating activities, to improving hand-eye coordination as part of a rehabilitation program, elders with a wide range of physical and cognitive abilities, most of whom have never used a computer, are now enjoying technology using specially adapted systems.

The #iN2L6020 tour made a stop at Samaritan Bethany on August 22, 2019.
During the stop at Samaritan Bethany, a couple residents were able to ride in the iN2L Tour Van for car karaoke. Click on the button to watch the video.

What is the purpose of this recognition program?
This bi-monthly award will recognize employees that go above and beyond demonstrating resident-directed care, display Samaritan Bethany's household model of care, and continuous commitment to our residents.
Culture Champion
What is Samaritan Bethany culture?
Samaritan Bethany practices the Household Model, which reflects a progressive and transformative approach to delivering services to older adults. The model is based on person-directed values and practices that consider and respect the voices of older adults and their caregivers. These principles include choice, dignity, respect, self-determination and purposeful living.

How to nominate a champion.
If you would like to recognize a team member, the Culture Champion board will be located on the main level at the end of the hallway by the beauty shop.

Foundation Update
Donors
Samaritan Bethany depends upon public donations of all sizes and amounts, to continue its work. You can help! Making a donation to the Foundation through our secure server is fast and easy, and when we receive your donation, we will send you an acknowledgement in the mail for tax purposes. Thank you for your support! For more in-formation please visit our Foundation page on our website or give directly .
The Samaritan Bethany Foundation exists to help support the mission of Samaritan Bethany by raising funds for n eeded projects, activities and equipment. They also spread the word about Samaritan Bethany; our needs and our mission through developing personal relationships, telling stories, social media and events.

Ceiling Lifts
Ceiling lifts increase resident comfort, security, and dignity during transfers.
The goal is to have at least one ceiling lift in each household. We need five more ceiling lifts to meet our goal. We have been successful in getting grants from the state of Minnesota, but these are only available to us every other year, and require a $10,000 match. P roceeds from Annual Year-End appeals and our Golf Tournament have gone towards this project in the past.

Church Partner Focus
Samaritan Bethany is supported by seven churches . Representatives from these seven churches make up the majority of the Samaritan Bethany Board of Directors. Through liaisons from each, we keep these churches aware of our mission, our needs for financial support and the volunteer opportunities available at Samaritan Bethany. Members of the c ongregations regularly volunteer as medical escorts, for hospice needs, as Sunday morning escorts for church services, and for the Auxiliary and gift shop. In this issue we are featuring Peace United Church of Christ.
Peace United Church of Christ
The building was in the shape of an "H" making every room an outside room with plenty of light and fresh air. They experienced the truth of "If ye have faith, ye can remove mountains."
Peace United Church of Christ has played a pivotal role in what Samaritan Bethany is today. The original church building stood on the corner of Broadway and 7th Street (what is now the Holiday Gas Station). In 1919, the Brotherhood from the Evangelical Church of Peace identified a need for a convalescent home in Rochester - a place where people coming to Rochester from all parts of the world, seeking care, could find a place where they would be properly taken care of. In 1920, the Brotherhood purchased property west of the church for this home to be called Samaritan.
Peace United Church of Christ's ties to Samaritan Bethany are still very important today. Today, Peace holds six seats on the Samaritan Bethany Board of Directors. We thank Peace for their endless support and dedication to our residents.
