Two Join Saluda Historic Depot Board
The board of the Saluda Historic Depot is pleased to announce the addition of two new board members.

David O'Brien, Board Member
David and his wife, Mary, both grew up in Charlotte and met in Raleigh while he was in graduate school at NCSU and she was a secretary on campus. After 18 years in Iowa and 15 years in Indiana, they retired to the mountains they have always loved.
David's career spanned more than 40 years, including the time he spent at NCSU and NASA Langley Research Center obtaining a Ph.D. with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. His career has focused on testing, data analysis, dynamics, noise control, product troubleshooting, and program management with John Deere Product Engineering Center and Honeywell Aerospace Aircraft Landing Systems. Currently, David "e-commutes" as a Senior Technical Specialist for an engineering consulting firm in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he develops and implements applied mathematical techniques for experimental data analysis. In addition, David has been an adjunct instructor for the Mechanical Engineering Departments of three universities: NCSU, Iowa State, and Purdue.
In the 1950s David and his father were avid "steam engine watchers" which initiated his love for trains - making it only natural that he enjoys volunteering at the Saluda Historic Depot.
Dave has been a volunteer at the Depot for a number of years and has shared his love of trains and knowledge of the Saluda Grade with visitors. He has been a valuable resource to the board members and always willing to give a helping hand.
Bob Keeton, Member-At-Large
Bob Keeton comes from dual career paths.  For more than 30 years, he worked in information technology for the State of Virginia and in broadcasting which included one of the first talk shows on satellite radio.

Before graduating from Va. Tech with majors in psychology and sociology, he was elected General Manager of WUVT, the student radio station.  He oversaw the station's expansion to Radford University and the addition of WUVT-FM.

The information technology career resulted in managing audio and video teleconferencing for Virginia state agencies and institutions.  He gained international notice for software he developed to schedule and track teleconferences.  It was unique in giving agencies travel cost-avoidance information for each electronic meeting.  He was called on to make presentations across the nation about the Department of Information Technology's approach to saving money using teleconferencing and telecourses.

He grew up in Richmond, retired from state service and moved to Colorado briefly, staying longer in Santa Fe, NM and then finding home in Tryon, NC.

Today, Keeton invests time doing video productions to support individuals and organizations in developing and delivering their messages.  In addition to A/V production, his award-winning radio talk shows often feature author interviews.  As writers became friends, some in Holland, Australia, and the U.S., they have sought his assistance with web site development and technical proof-reading.

More at http://www.LivingSuccessfully.com.

Bob has donated his time and videography talent to the Saluda Historic Depot almost since the beginning of its opening. He has videoed and edited Saluda Train Tales and produced high-quality videos that are available on the SaludaHistoricDepot.com website and also YouTube.

"We are excited to add these two members to our board. As the popularity of the Depot's museum grows and it becomes more and more of a tourist destination, we need people with fresh ideas and skills and talents to continue the success and growth of the museum," says chairperson, Judy Ward.

Saluda's Elementary Goes Italian
The faculty at Saluda Elementary School have embraced Saluda's Sister City, Carunchio, Italy and has outlined a year-long program to connect the two schools and their students.

The month of October will see the beginning of the "Italian Word of the Week." Students will soon be saying hello, welcome, thank you and many other words in Italian.

Dr. Maneen is putting together a "culture kit" highlighting all things Italian. The Saluda and Hendersonville travelers who are going to Carunchio in October plan to take pictures of Carunchio buildings, landmarks, city hall, the school, the classrooms and students, the cemetery (really interesting and different from ours), the church and more. Pictures will be incorporated into the culture kit along with the Italian flag, maps, maybe recipes and anything else they can come up with.
Once completed, the culture kit will rotate among classrooms to help the students better understand Italian culture.

Book Project for the Italian Children
Saluda Sister City is finishing up its collection of children's books by October 5.  The books will be carried to Carunchio by our October delegation of travelers. The Children in Carunchio are fluent in English and want to have American children's books to read.  If you have any to donate, call Judy Thompson at 828-489-6578.

Walks in the Woods

October 7, 2018 Old Cove Road  This is an old road that went from Saluda to Green River back in the 1920's, before the current Green River Cove Rd was built. It follows a stream flowing down to Fish Top and is now protected with a conservation easement. The walking will be easy to moderate, and occasionally steep, but the views are worth it. Betsy guarantees this walk is ALL down-hill.

October 21, 2018
Round Mountain  Easy to beyond moderate. Explore the site of the Battle of Round Mountain. Located off Howard Gap Road, this walk offers a picnic area, rock outcroppings, and for the adventurous, a strenuous climb to the top of the mountain for Piedmont views.

Walkers meet 2pm at the parking lot of the Saluda Library. A SCLT member will keep you aware of the terrain of the trail and share their insights about the history, flora, and fauna of the area as they lead each walk.

Prepare for each walk with comfortable shoes, a walking stick, water, and a snack.  Please provide any pertinent medical history to your guide.  Many of these hikes will access private property.

For more information click here or contact Chuck Hearon at  (828) 817-0364 or chearon@skyrunner.net.

Moody Property
Response has been excellent and there is still bead board and flooring; also old brick and old growth 2x4, etc for adoption. There are some tin shingles which make a great medium for oil and acrylic paints. All of this can be yours. Donations to SCLT are suggested and appreciated.  For more information, call John Savage, 828-749-3906.

SCLT was very lucky to have had a meeting with Renie Moody, granddaughter of Robert H Moody, an early railroad employee.

SLIP to Offer AARP's Safe Driving Class on October 11
Saluda Living in Place (SLIP) will offer the AARP Safe Driving Class on Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the Saluda Fire Department on Greenville St.

A lot has changed since most of us have gotten our licenses. Come and learn updated rules of the road, safety strategies to reduce the likelihood of having a crash, how to manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time and how to drive more safely in today's challenging environment.

AARP has found that over nine in 10 course participants report changing at least one key driving behavior for the better. Over eight in 10 participants felt that information they learned in the course has prevented them from being in a crash. And you may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course. Consult your insurance agent for details.

The class will be taught by Hendersonville resident Ollie Bunch. Ollie has taught the Safe Driving Class for 15 years. This is a classroom course...no road driving. The fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Checks may be made payable to AARP.

You must register for this class. Email diannearbour@rsnet.org to register or call the SLIP Office at (828) 490-1040 before Monday, October 8, 2018.

Mark your calendars for upcoming SLIP events:

Jo is a certified Kripalu Movement and Yo-Chi Instructor. She has also completed the Golden Hearts: Senior Fitness Training. Below is a description of Yo-Chi:

Yo-Chi combines two disciplines that have survived for hundreds of years; Yoga and Ta'i Chi. These are the oldest mind body programs still existing today. Yo-Chi is a fusion program that gives you benefits in both stability, strength, mobility, and flexibility. Yoga focuses on stillness and finding stability. T'ai Chi focuses on slow, controlled never ending mobility. Doing these disciplines together, either alternating or in combination, can help increase your overall wellness.

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais wrote: "I believe the unity of mind and body is an objective reality. They are not just parts somehow related to each other but an inseparable whole while functioning. A brain without a body could not think."
Given that truth, what could a fully embodied brain and fully mindful body do?

At F eldenkrais® ️/ Saluda   we explore those questions. As we observe the way we move NOW, we discover the ways we CAN move - some new, others forgotten.  Movement is the vehicle for physical, mental, and emotional growth and wellbeing.  With increased awareness, neuroplasticity works to our advantage - whatever we do, at any age.

Care : Intelligent movement for health and sustainability.  Discover innovative neuromuscular re-education for self-care and support the treatment of neurological, orthopedic, chronic pain, and stress-related conditions.

Performance: Personal ergonomics for daily function, fitness, and creative activities.  Enjoy ease and efficiency, improve coordination, manage stress, and experience vital, dynamic posture.

Calendars to Benefit Alison
Saluda and the Carolina Foothills communities have a long history of rallying to help others in their time of need. Please assist us in helping Alison by purchasing an Art of the Horse calendar!

Alison Leclerc, a well-respected Tryon area trainer and competitor, had a very serious riding accident in June that resulted in her fracturing several cervical vertebrae. She had surgery and is currently receiving extensive physical rehabilitation at Shepherd Center in Atlanta. While she is gaining movement in her arms and hands, the eventual outcome of her spinal cord injury is still uncertain.

Friends of Alison had the great idea of creating a calendar as a fundraiser using photos of "Art of the Horse" statues displayed all over the Foothills area including two right here in Saluda. Suzanne Strickland and Mindy Wiener of Our Carolina Foothills, the force behind "Art of the Horse" and other community events, were quickly on board. Cost of production was covered by friends of Alison so that 100% of the money received from calendar sales will go to help with Alison's medical and rehab expenses.

The 15-month calendars are $20 each and are available in Saluda at Thompson's Store, Salamander, Wildflour Bakery, Beverly-Hanks Realty, and Saluda Outfitters. Just down the mountain they can also be purchased at The Farm House, Hay Rack, Little Mountain Farm Supply, Overmountain Vineyard, Cool Mama's Bakery and other locations. They'd be beautiful Christmas, corporate or just-for-fun presents, and for a great cause!

"Turn, Turn, Turn"
Summer is reluctant to give up in Saluda. Hints of fall-like crisp, cool mornings warming up to warm golden days that are becoming shorter make you feel that the splendor of fall is just around the corner. Golden and red hues sprinkle poplars and maple trees, and dogwoods are turning their rustic reddish-brown color.

Recently hatched caterpillars are busy chomping up leaves while the subtle electric hum of the cicadas croon a constant background noise.

Final harvesting of gardens, brown hayfields, and dry cornstalks are great fodder for making haybales for autumn decorations. This will be the last month for the Saluda Tailgate Market until the Holiday Market in November.

Fall in the mountains is when visitors and day trippers return to view magnificent colors and breathe in the fresh bucolic outdoors. Saluda offers many hiking, climbing, kayaking, biking, and ziplining adventures. And, there are many places to choose to stay with many B&Bs, mountain cabins, and lodges available. Check these out at Saluda.com.

"Turn, turn, turn," as the lyrics go to remind us that October marks a time of change. A time to reap the rewards that the fall season brings us. Even as we celebrate the fall season in the mountains, our thoughts are with our fellow communities and our eastern NC neighbors as they rebuild homes and lives after so much loss from extreme storms. Saludians want you to know that we care and we are here with an open hand when needed.

Special Thanks!
Don Mintz Builders would like to thank all of you who donated supplies and who made monetary donations for the victims of Hurricane Florence.  The trailer full of needed supplies was delivered to the victims on the NC coast Thursday, September 27.

Saluda Train Tales
Minerals of NC - Beautiful Meets Useful
October 19
Laura Fields will delight and educate you on Friday, October 19 during Saluda Train Tales. Although, this topic may seem a little "off track," the NC mineral industry is one of the reasons the railroads were built to western NC. Laura will explore the NC mineral industry over the past 200 years till today. She will show some of the rocks our mountains produce and how they are used.

After a successful career in real estate and serving as the town's commissioner, Laura now has time to turn her passion for collecting unique Rocks, Minerals, and Gems into a business on Main Street in Saluda. Professionals in Alternative Health Care use Laura's stones to assist in the healing process of their patients. The Mineral Spirits gallery has evolved with this need in mind and the collection is not only beautiful but presented in groups by their Chakra Colors.

Saluda Train Tales is a free monthly event to educate the community about the importance of Saluda's railroad history and the Saluda Grade. These events are at the Saluda Historic Depot, 32 W Main Street, Saluda, NC 28773and start at 7pm. Doors open at 6:30pm. The events are free, and voluntary donations are appreciated. Memberships and donations to the Saluda Historic Depot in 2018 will enable us to receive incentive grant funds from the Polk County Community Foundation.

First Heritage Musical Premieres in Saluda
The Saluda Historic Depot Theatre Troupe is producing Saluda's first musical to be premiered on November 17, 2018. The production will depict Saluda's historical progression from the time the Cherokee Indians settled in the land of "green corn" until today. The original play was written by Corinne Gerwe in collaboration with members of the newly-formed Young Acting Krew "YAK" of the Saluda Historic Depot Theatre Troupe, with a musical score written by Dan Foster to be performed by his band, the Radio Rangers.

Corinne Gerwe, who with Bill Jameson co-founded the theatre troupe, recalls attending a Saluda Historic Depot board meeting during a brain-storming session on how the Depot could contribute toward bringing back "Railroad Day" in Saluda. Many remembered when Saluda celebrated this "ole timey" day when townspeople dressed in costume from the early-time era. "I began concentrating on developing this idea into a theatrical event focused on Saluda's heritage and railroad history by including children of Saluda interested in the performing arts. The Young Acting Krew had just been formed, and it seemed the right time to do this. The kids were so excited about creating a heritage play, they have since thrust the idea to realization," says Corinne.

Corinne is an author of several fiction and non-fiction novels, three of which are a series of murder mysteries set in a small town much like Saluda. Her latest mystery, "The Silent Scream of the Straw Man" has just been released. She has been a contributing board member and supporter of the Depot since its inception.

Dan Foster is a singer/songwriter based in Atlanta, Georgia. "Saluda Grade" was written by Dan after walking around Saluda before performing at the Purple Onion and noticed the historical marker describing the remarkable, legendary Saluda Grade. In 2009 it was featured on an album by High Cotton that spent several weeks on the Georgia top 20 Roots music charts. Dan rearranged the song for the play with his current group, The Radio Rangers, in addition to new songs featuring acoustic music with strong vocal harmonies. Writing melodic songs that tell a good story is Dan's passion.

"The history of Saluda is unique but shares a heritage with so many communities across our country.  The railroads were the backbone of our country's growth and touched so many people and communities.  I believe the wisdom to move forward is provided by the struggles of our past.  I am honored to help in this small way to the celebration of Saluda history.  Saluda is a special place," said Dan Foster.

In addition to YAK and the adult Bell Tower Players, there are many others involved in this community-wide production. "The town is excited about this musical and volunteers have jumped in to give their talents and time to costume designing, building stage sets and props, to be extras, do makeup, plan sound and lighting, and video/filming and for cameo appearances of the towns historians and legends," says Corinne.

The production team and the Saluda Historic Depot board hope that everyone who is willing and able will attend this "One Night Only" performance. Tickets will be $10 for everyone 12 years and older and purchased at the door. Children under 12 will be free. Special group arrangements can be made to purchase tickets by calling Corinne. They encourage everyone to put this on their calendars now because you won't want to miss this one-time historical story of Saluda told in a musical format.
The performance will be held at the Party Place & Event Center and owners Bob and Linda Whitaker granted a special concession on the regular event price for the use of the facility. The Party Place & Event Center is at 221 Friendship Church Rd., Saluda, NC. Performance will start at 7pm. Doors open at 6pm.

The Saluda Historic Depot Theatre Troupe was formed to provide a forum for a variety of theatrical performances reflecting the creative spirit of our community. The goal is to produce plays that will include those from legitimate theater, historic depictions of Saluda's rich history, and literary and poetic readings; all will demonstrate local artistry and talent. The Saluda Historic Depot will provide the setting for presentations suitable for its locale and will partner with other venues for settings suitable for each production.

Sponsorships for the Playbill are available; $200 for major sponsor, $25 for all other sponsors. Your name will be printed on the Playbill as a sponsor of the musical.
The musical will benefit the Saluda Historic Depot, a non-profit dedicated to making the historic train station into a museum in order to highlight the history of the railroad, Saluda's downtown, its people, and the history of its natural resources.

Saluda Salon Garage
Changing the world one haircut at a time.
Welcome Michael Cohen, new proprietor and hair designer in Saluda. Michael will open the first week of October at 144 Hwy 176 W across from the Green River BBQ in the old Esso Gas Station. This is what motivated him to use the "garage" motif for the name of his business. He will expand that theme with his décor and names of ala carte services like "tune up" for a haircut, "car wash" will be a shampoo. Michael feels that designing hair is artwork and frames each style with his customer's composition to create the style and look for each individual. Michael says, "A good hair cut awakens and motivates...it makes you feel good about you! That is the outcome I desire for every person I have ever worked with!"

After 30 years in the business, including being the art director for Toni & Guy Hair Products & Salons, he most recently designed hair at Red Arbor in Hendersonville. Helping the homeless has been Michael's passion "to make them feel better about themselves," and inspired him to start Helpinghair.com. "This is a business of changing and shaping lives. The work we do at our Non-Profit Organization was aimed at providing a holistic approach to solving some of our society's biggest challenges. By being mobile we provided a service that can be sought and used by everyone," says Michael. He will also inspire his customers to help those who need it in his new Saluda location, but you will have to make a visit to see how this works.

Accepting new customers of all genders and ages!

Michael can be reached at 828-450-3270 or burnt1913@yahoo.com.

Wildflour Bakery
I (Debi Thomas) drove the Parkway yesterday evening.  Already there were cars with license plates from further south at the overlooks...and the view, with just a blush of color beginning to show, was beautiful.   We are so lucky to live where we can enjoy this spectacular show day after day...just look out for the "leaf peepers" who may be distracted by a Sugar Maple showing off her flashy red leaves.

Wildflour will be savoring the last of the produce from our local farmers.  Look for squash, shitakes sweet potatoes and kale in our soups, bean bowls and omelets.  Pumpkin, apples and gingerbread are sure to be featured in cakes, pies, pancakes and waffles.  The Thanksgiving order sheet will be ready this month.  It's always best to get your order in early to reserve your favorite pies and rolls.
October 20th is the always exciting Hincapie Bike Race.  Hundreds of bikers will be peddling their way right down Main St.  It's great fun and they love to hear you cheering them on!

Pearson's Falls Glen
Early fall at Pearson's Falls is a glorious time. The long, hot summer is behind us, the leaves are beginning to change color, and the sky has turned a crisp autumn blue. It is refreshingly cool as you hike the gently rising ¼ mile trail along tumbling Colt Creek up to the 90' waterfalls.

As the days begin to shorten, the leaves on the trees start the slow process of changing color. You will see light greens, yellows, oranges and reds. Masses of purple Asters, yellow Goldenrods, pink Turtlehead and snowy Virgin Bower fill sunny spots along the trail.

On Thursday, Oct. 11 there will be a Guided Walk with bird expert John Cely. The walk starts at 9:00 and registration is required as the group is limited to 20 persons so everyone can see and hear. Please call the Gatehouse 828-749-3031 for details and to register. Bring your binoculars.
Pearson's Falls and Glen belong to the Tryon Garden Club. The Club is celebrating its 90th Anniversary on October 24 with a Free Day. All local residents are invited to come enjoy an outing to Pearson's Falls on Wednesday the 24th at no cost.

Bring your family. There are picnic tables for lunches, benches to rest or read and covered shelters in case of showers. There is also a green restroom featuring Clivus Multrum composting toilets and a living roof composed of plants native to Pearson's Falls Glen that provide insulation for the building.

Open daily 10 until 6 with last admittance at 5:00.
Admission is charged to Pearson's Falls. Group rates and annual passes are available. No pets are allowed except service animals. No wading or swimming.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of John T. Coates, III or "Jack' as we all knew him. Jack was a founding member of the Historic Saluda Committee in 2010 and had cameo appearances in the film, "Going Home: Saluda's Music Traditions." In 2014, Jack participated in a full-length oral history interview with members of the HSC. He shared stories of what it was like growing up in Saluda and recalled many wonderful memories of the place he called home for so many years. According to Jack, there was no better place to live than Saluda. To see his full interview, please visit the HSC YouTube page. Jack, we are sure going to miss you. Thanks for being a friend!

Conservation Corner

The Circle of Life
Saluda Community Land Trust, with help from the Polk County Community Foundation, purchased two parcels of land along the RR along the Henderson/Polk County line, both owned by heirs of Robert H Moody. One of these parcels has a clean title because it was purchased through the foreclosure process, and the other parcel is a bit different; one of the two owners listed on the deed sold his interest to SCLT but the other 50% was registered to a person (the missing Moody) who has not been located since the year 2000. To explain all of the hoops that SCLT has been jumping through for the past 4 years in order to clear up this mess would take far more than my allotted 700-900 words for this corner, so let me simply say that it's a mess. The joke at SCLT is that we are looking for a Moody heir who could clear up the title- "any Moody will do". The property is very important because of its location, within walking distance of Saluda School, and it is a beautiful piece of unspoiled mountain land.

Now the story begins. A woman from Greensboro NC came for vacation in Saluda a month or so ago. She picked up a printed copy of the Saluda Lifestyles and took it back home for an 85-year-old friend who spent her childhood in Saluda. That woman was Lorena ("Reenie") Moody L. Littlejohn. Reenie came upon the SCLT portion of the Lifestyles telling about the workday that coming Friday at the Moody house, and she called the number. Then she got John Savage, the Moody volunteer worker. To put it mildly, Reenie was ecstatic. She and four others of her cousins, all now deceased, had fought for many years to preserve their fathers' home place, only to be defeated by Robert L. Moody (now deceased), father of the missing Moody. Since that telephone call to John, so much has happened.

Reenie spent two weeks gathering up all the Moody family history. Her close friends in Greensboro started planning a trip to bring her back home, to see the place she loved so much. The SCLT board helped arrange for lodgings for the night. Reenie and her friends Ed and Peggy drove from Greensboro on Thursday afternoon. We all talked for a while, then spent hours on the Moody property, at the site where the old house used to be. We found the footstones from the graves of her grandmother and grandfather for Rennie to take back home. She rubbed her hands in the sand, as she had done so many times as a child. She marveled at the old rock wall that she dearly loved, which had recently been cleaned off weeks before by SCLT volunteers. Then we all went to Twin Lakes for a picnic, where she told us more and more and more about Saluda and its residents the way it used to be. She was SO happy to be 'home', surrounded by folks who were working hard to preserve the land she loved.

The next morning, we all ate at Ward's Grill. Then we walked up the street to the bank where Robin watched Reenie sign a quitclaim deed for the land and then put her notary stamp upon it, helping to clear up the cloudy title. Then we went to the historic depot (the Moodys worked for the railroad), where Reenie told us even more stories about who worked on the train, about her uncle who was killed in a RR accident. She was so happy to tell the stories, and we were so eager to hear everything that she said.

Reenie, Ed, and Peggy drove back to Greensboro that afternoon. Reenie talked about nothing but how happy she was the whole way home.

The next morning when Peggy called to check on her, Rennie said that she'd had a rough night and needed to go to the hospital. Even though she had been fine for her last check-up, the cancer of 12 years ago had come back and she could not breathe. After 4 days in the hospital she went to hospice and died this morning at 5am. Her last words were "I'm happy. I'm ready to die now. I'm ready to go home."

I do not believe in coincidences. There is a divine order, or a spirit of goodness, that connects all of us though positive vibrations, if we take time to listen. It was a random act of kindness, or love, that made Reenie's friend pick up the Saluda Lifestyles and take it to Reenie in Greensboro. Why did Reenie read it? Because she still loved the memories of her childhood home. From there it all fell into order: she called John, John sent me the email, friends brought her to Saluda because they loved Reenie, and Reenie was able to fulfill one of her greatest wishes, to see her childhood home kept safe. Reenie was a widow with no children, so this was very important to her. And it all happened because we cared, within less than three weeks.

We've all heard of the circle of life. It's the connections that make our lives complete. We spend our entire lives trying to figure out why we are here, and what we're here for. There's something about making peace with our beginnings, and our childhood, that often completes that mysterious circle of life. To have been part of that process with Reenie is an honor for all of us who were called to do so, all thanks to a little blurb in the Saluda Lifestyles.
In the Neighborhood
By Amy Wood
The Bear Necessities
It's October, Hooray! I just love the crisp, cool air and the kaleidoscope of leaves that fall brings to Saluda. I love the feeling of finally falling into the routines of the school year, of the days getting shorter and nudging us to bed earlier. But this year, I think the autumn gift that I'm most looking forward to is when the bears start thinking about hibernating!

We've been among the many households around town that have been victim to the Bear Buffet, which means we've found our trash strewn all over the road and our can tipped over and empty like a dinner party gone wrong (or right, depending on your kind of party). We've bungeed it, tied it, waited till garbage day to put it out--but no matter--our neighborhood fuzzy wuzzy must be smarter than the average bear, because he's had no trouble helping himself to our grey, plastic picnic basket on wheels. In fact, one early morning we awoke to the sound of our trash can being wheeled down the road for some more private dining. Wish I could have gotten a picture of that!
I don't know about you, but if I could choose, I'd prefer that my bears live in the woods. As a former wilderness guide, I know how to prepare for that scenario, and I'm glad I do. This summer, our family went backcountry camping at Panthertown Valley, near Lake Toxaway. It's a beautiful piece of wilderness with several waterfalls and camping spots, but we were warned before we set out that there's been an increase in bear activity lately. No problem, we packed all our food in an approved bear canister and even found a nice beach far away from our campsite to bury it in the sand. Put a big rock over it and voila, no bear's going to steal our picnic basket! When we got back to our tents and prepared for a peaceful night of sleeping in the great outdoors, I hear my husband call out "Bear!"
As we retreated to edge of the clearing, we watched as the adolescent lumbered right through our campsite. Sniff, sniff, pause. Walk a few steps. Sniff, sniff, pause. Finally, dissatisfied that there was absolutely nothing with a scent to be eaten, licked, or otherwise devoured, he moved on to make his evening rounds. That night, I heard him again and scared him away, and then twice again in the morning when he was expecting breakfast. Never in my years of backpacking have I ever had a bear experience like this!
When we walked back to the beach to dig up and cook our breakfast, we exchanged high fives as we pulled the canister out of the sand, unharmed. Victory! However, our drink bag with tea, coffee and juice powder (and our stove and fuel) that we expertly hung from a tree wasn't so lucky. It was no match for this bear,  who, from the claw marks on the bark, must have climbed right up that tree and helped himself to some Tangerine Emergen-C and some coffee grounds. Luckily, we had enough caffeine to survive the next two mornings! On our way to breakfast the next day, our new friend stopped us in our tracks, and we played a brief game of "who's the bigger animal?" holding our arms up high and asking it politely to move on and go back to sleep!
All in all, we had a great time, cooling off under waterfalls and hiking up to take in some of the most beautiful views we've ever seen, but the daily morning, evening and middle of the night bear visits were exhausting.  We hiked out grateful for our time together, eager to treat ourselves to some fried food and ice cream, showers, four walls, a bed, and NO bears.
So, imagine our surprise, as we drove up to the house on Sunday evening, to hear my husband call out, yet again, "Bear!" There it was, in our yard, heading straight for our trash can. It didn't get ours, but it had helped itself to our two neighbors', both of which had already left town. We cleaned it up, put it all in our trash can (the first time we've filled it up!) and went to bed. And well, you know the rest. We were cleaning it up again the next morning.
Since then, we've strapped our can to the telephone pole and strung it up so tight that the lid won't budge. We've stood guard on the porch before sunrise with a handful of rocks and other makeshift weapons, thinking someone has to train these bears that humans are not their friends (even if we do leave our picnic baskets full of food out for them each week). We also got some tips from our friendly folks who pick up on Monday morning. I begged them for any advice that could help us. I got two pieces of advice which I'll share with you because it's worked! 1) Put a little bleach in the trash can, pour it right over the bags to cut back on the "yummy" smell. And 2) Sprinkle some cayenne or crushed red pepper into the can so if a bear does open the lid, the smell is so overwhelming it will stay away. So far, so good, but I tell you, I sure am ready for hibernation season which usually starts as early as November in our area. Bring it on!
Author's note : While these may be funny stories, bears are serious business and can be dangerous to humans out in the woods and at home. As I write this, a woman in Swannonoa is recovering from a rare attack she suffered while walking her dog. Wildlife experts advise people who encounter bears to "...not approach the bear. Quietly move away and leave the area. If a safe distance away from the bear, make loud noises, shout, or bang pots and pans together to scare it away. Give the bear a clear escape route. Learn more bear safety tips at bearwise.org."
