MLK Assembly

On January 14th, Salk honored Reverand Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an assembly. A group of students re-enacted his "I have a Dream Speach", and our African Drummers performed. A special thanks to our keynote speaker, Yolunda Blunt.

Class Registration 2024/25 School Year

  • February 8th - rising 9th grade registration for Shadle (@ Salk)
  • February 12th-13th - rising 7th grade registration
  • February 14th-15th - rising 8th grade registration
  • February 26th-30th - rising 6th grade registration at elementary feeder schools

*For rising 9th graders: If you are wanting to "choice" into a different school other than Shadle or your neighborhood school, you will need to register with your neighborhood school and fill out the "choice" application on-line by February 15th. The "choice" school will reach out for registration information after acceptance. If you are absent on the day Shadle is here registering, a counselor will follow up the next week to get you signed up. Shadle will return in the following weeks to meet with students for registration.

National School Counselors Week

February 5th-9th is National School Counselors Week. Salk is lucky to have Megan Decker and Lyndsey Sabo as our counselors. Mrs. Decker serves students with last names A-J, and Mrs. Sabo serves students with last names K-Z. If you've had the privilege of being helped by either of these two amazing women, this is a great week to express your appreciation. Thank you, Megan and Lyndsey!

8th Grade Basketball and 7th & 8th Grade Wrestling

Tryouts for 8th grade boys and girls basketball and practice for 7th and 8th grade wrestling start Monday, February 12th from 3:40-5:20pm.

Boys B-ball Schedule
Girls B-ball Schedule
Wrestling Schedule

Both sports require athletes to have a current physical on file (physicals are good for 2 years), have an ASB card ($15 from the business office), and be signed up on Final Forms. A 5:30pm late take-home bus is available to all regular bussers. All other athletes must have a ride at the school by 5:30pm or be able to walk home.

Sports Registration

We're excited to celebrate our first semester honor roll students on Friday, February 23rd, with a black light dance in our cafeteria from 5:30-7:00pm. It will have a lighthearted vibe with clean music and snacks where kids can have a fun time together. The day before, Thursday, February 22nd, students will receive their honor roll certificate, bumper sticker, and a VIP bracelet that will be their ticket into the dance. We're proud of you, Spartans!

(This event is in lieu of the honor roll assembly ceremony.)

Adventure Club

The Salk Adventure Club took on a new challenge in January as they attended Snow School on Mount Spokane. This class was led by members of the Lands Council and taught students about how winter affects our local area. Twelve students snowshoed 1.5 miles into Smith's Gap and learned about the effects of a cold climate on animal habitat and the mountain's plants and trees. After a lunch break, students then practiced locating a "lost skier" using beacon locators. They also experienced a snow pit where they learned to measure the snowpack to help predict water availability for the summer. Snow School was an exciting and full experience for students!

First Semester Report Cards

First semester ends February 1st. Final grades will be posted in PowerSchool, and paper copies will be sent home with students on February 12th.

NO SCHOOL

  • Friday, 2/2 - Semester Break
  • Monday, 2/19 - Presidents Day
  • Tuesday, 2/20- Teacher Learning Improvement Day

*The school office will be closed on

these dates as well.

School Choice Application

The majority of our students go to Shadle Park High School, but there are a few that will go elsewhere because of their address. You should have received communication by email and/or a neon half-sheet of paper sent home with your student on Friday, December 22nd. If you would like your student to go to a high school other than the one they’ve been assigned for the 2024-25 school year, you need to fill out a choice application January 1, 2024 - February 15, 2024. To do this, click on this link, or go to www.spokaneschools.org, click on 2024-25, click on School Choice. You will need to create an account. If you have questions, please call Louisa Dotson at 354-5621.

Congratulations to December's

CTE Robotics

My name is Chris Trechter, and I teach the CTE Robotics class at Salk Middle School. This semester-long class focuses on two parts: computer programming and creating mechanical robots. No prior experience in programming or mechanics is required. The class starts off with learning about block coding video games. We then explore mechanical gear systems and the difference between Force, Torque, and Speed. Once the basics of code and mechanics have been learned, we apply the knowledge to controlling pre-made robots to compete in tournaments.  As the semester progresses, students create a programmed vehicle from scratch that drives across our school using only code. This class allows students to test their creativity and skills via project-based learning.

January 14th through March 24th, SPS hosts Open Gym at select, local schools on Sundays from 12:00-2:00pm for students grade 5-12 to play basketball and other sports-related activities. Click the link below for locations and to sign-up.

(Some Sundays may be cancelled due to gym availability at an individual school and holiday weekends. Please check the registration or that school's website for exceptions.)
