The You Make A Difference Award is presented to staff members whose exemplary actions support students, colleagues and the mission of Salina Public Schools. Recipients of these awards receive a lapel pin and a handwritten note personally delivered by a board of education member.

Lakewood Middle School Art Teacher
Above and beyond her own work responsibilities, Nancy stepped in to assist substitute teachers during a long term absence of a colleague. She contacted parents and assisted with classroom management and lessons. Thank you Nancy!
 
Denise Bennett
South High School Financial Secretary
Upon qualifying for regional competition, The Salina South Robotics Team was pressed to obtain supplies needed to rebuild aspects of their robot. Denise not only ordered supplies but followed up with emails and phone calls, happily going the extra mile to support teacher and student success. Thank you Denise!
 
Cynthia Malir
Stewart Elementary Substitute Teacher
As a substitute teacher, Cynthia's adaptability is much appreciated. When a teacher had to go home mid-day, she willingly switched her sub position to help out. Thank you Cynthia for making a difference!
 
Susan Burchill
Oakdale Elementary Special Education Teacher
Susan's problem solving and creativity improved the bathroom climate for Oakdale students in grades 3-5. She created an incentive program that addressed a problem and positively engaged the students. Thank you Susan!
 
Superintendent's Excellence Awards
Certificates were presented to the following students who qualified for state competitions:
 
Salina High School Central/Choir: Central High had the following students selected to the KMEA All-State Honor Choir. They were Ethan Badders, Maria Putzier, Gage Burmaster and Bradyn Houltberg. Ryan Holmquist is the vocal music director.
 
Salina High School South/Choir:   South High had the following students selected to the KMEA All-State Middle Level Choir. They were Santiago Vasquez, Amaya Dungan and Courtney White. Eddie Creer, Jr. is the vocal music director.
 
Salina High School South/Band:   South High's band students were selected to participate in the KMEA All-State Band. Ryan Davis was selected for trumpet, Miranda Urban for horn and Derek Leamer for mallet percussion. Trevor Herrington for percussion was selected to participate in the KMEA All-State Orchestra. Darren Brooks is the band director.
 
Salina High School Central/Thespian:   Central High Thespian Troupe's The Fox in the Fairway was selected as one of eleven shows throughout the nation to perform at the International Thespian Festival. Troupe members include Ethan Badders, Jordan Bottom, Riley Rundell, Samuel Lenkiewicz, Carolyn Gutsch, William Hayes, Sarah Hazelton, Annie Taggart, Audrey Burgoon and Bradyn Houltberg. Chad Nulik is the theatre director.
 
Salina High School South/Thespian:  South High Thespian Troupe received Gold Honor Troupe award at the 2017 Kansas State Thespian Conference. Troupe members include Sofie Flores, Katie Zuercher, Nathan Zimmerman, Nick Salem, Anthony Nitbouapha, Addison Praytor, Noah Endreshak, Andrew Gulseth, Albanee Garcia, Mikayla Robben, Cameron Munk, Brendan Larson, Logan Kitchener, Sici DeArvil, Miranda Urban, Petricia Hall, Quinn Munk, Bayleigh Hultgren and Mason Leatherman. Kate Lindsay is the theatre director.
 
Salina High School South/Debate:   The Debate team included Logan Fricks, Santiago Vasquez, Alvaro Escobedo, Tyler Ross, Asi (Lou) Mailau, Haylee Householter, Mikayla Nixon, Andres Mata, Jacob Sweet, Brandon Stewart, Madeline Lilak, Aaliyah Roberts, Madison Hamilton, Ashley Scott and Gavin Jones. The team is coached by Megan Hagaman.
 
Salina High School South/Art:   Kansas Regional Scholastic Art Awards Competition participant was Ulises Salas, Silver Key. Kurt Wolf and Jessica Harris are the art teachers.

The board of education approved individual development plans, college credit, building staff development plans and district staff development plans.
 
Encumbrance Listing 
The board of education approved the following encumbrance: McCownGordon Construction, $153,656, replacement of in-ground water service lines at South High School.
 
Uniform Bids
The board of education approved the high school football uniform bid from Lou's Sporting Goods in the amount of $28,640 for Central High School football uniforms and the bid to Eastbay, Inc. in the amount of $30,268.96 for South High School football uniforms.
 
Audit Contract
The board of education approved the audit contract with Varney & Associates, CPAs, LLC, for the year ending June 30, 2017.
 
Acceptance of Donation
The board of education approved the donation of $5,499 from the Community Corrections.
 
Early Head Start Child Care Partnership Grant
The board of education approved the Kansas Early Head Start Child Care Partnership Application for $538,050. This grant will provide center-based all-day services to 51 enrolled children ages birth to 3.
 
Grant Application - Early Head Start Grant
The board of education approved the Kansas Early Head Start Home Visitation Grant Application for $220,000. Donated services include home visiting and center-based child care partner programming. The program serves low income families.
 
South High Out-of-State Field Trip
The board approved the South High New Dawn trip to New Orleans, LA on May 19-24, 2017.
 
The board of education approved the 2017-2018 school calendar.
 
The board of education approved the tentative calendar for the 2018-2019 school year.
 
ACT Aspire Purchase
Linn Exline, executive director of school improvement, presented a proposal to administer the ACT Aspire for grades 3 through 10 at a cost of $58,860.
 
Course Proposals
Linn Exline, executive director of school improvement, presented summaries for two courses to be added to expand the elective options at the high school level.

  • Mary Anne Trickle, board member, attended the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) Advocacy Conference, toured the South High School construction along with other board members, joined students and staff at Opportunity Now for a Board appreciation luncheon along with other board members, attended the calendar committee meeting and participated in a conference call with the Smoky Hill Education Service Center.

Superintendent's Report
Mr. William D. Hall, superintendent of schools, thanked board members who toured construction at South and Central high schools. He informed the board that the South High east wing will be finished after spring break and after that the demolition of a pod will start. Mr. Hall reported that he read to preschool classes at Heartland Early Education, attended an early childhood conference, the Council of Superintendents meeting and the Salina Chamber of Commerce banquet. He shared that he attended the Kansas-Missouri Superintendents forum and the Horizon Awards ceremony in Topeka where Ashley Winger, teacher at Salina West Education Center, was honored. Mr. Hall reported that Senate Bill 2270 was introduced as a new school finance formula and that it mirrors the old formula and raises state aid over the next three years. He indicated that the dollars needed to fund it have not been identified. Mr. Hall presented an update of the school district to the Saline County Republican Women.
