The SalemRecycles Mission is to reduce trash tonnage in the City of Salem by increasing recycling, diverting reusable items, and motivating city stakeholders through education and information.

May Repair Cafe

Don’t throw away your broken item – bring it to the Repair Café! SalemRecycles will be hosting a Repair Café on Saturday, May 20th from 9am-12 noon at the Community Life Center at 401 Bridge Street. 


Appointments are required and walk ins will not be accepted. Schedule an appointment by contacting Janelle Rolke at jrolke@salem.com or 978-619-5672.


Repair volunteers will be available to mend clothing, sew buttons, sharpen scissors and knives, tinker with or rewire electronics and lamps, diagnose computer issues, glue wooden furniture and ceramics, bicycle maintenance, and more.


Please keep in mind these services may change as we confirm volunteers. We hope to see you at this fun event where you can learn how to fix things and reduce your waste!

Purchase a Rain Barrel

The City of Salem continues a partnership with the Great American Rain Barrel Company (TGARBC), to provide rain barrels to Salem residents. As a result of this partnership with, we offer these 60 gallon capacity rain barrels at a cost of $85 to help residents conserve water, save money and reduce stormwater run-off. The rain barrels are available in two colors: unpainted (black) and terracotta. 


Contact the Department of Public Works, located at 5 Jefferson Avenue or call 978-744-3302. The current cost of a rain barrel is $85 Please make checks payable to the City of Salem.

International Compost Awareness Week

Help Salem celebrate International Composting Awareness Week by starting to compost or refer a friend to start!



1. Curbside Composting

2. FREE Mack Park Drop Off Compost Bins 

  • City of Salem Compost Drop Off Station Registration Form (google.com)
  • Salem residents can drop off food waste and organics ONLY in brown paper bags or compostable bio bags. 
  • Please do not dump any yard waste, trash or recycling here. 
  • These bins are available 24/7 for you to drop off compost at your convenience, for free. Please see the map below to see the exact location at Mack Park.


3. Home Composting with The Earth Machine

Watch your food scraps turn into compost in your own backyard!

Please call Janelle Rolke at 978-619-5672 to order a discounted, at home compost bin for $25 (1/2 price!) pictured to the right.
