Worship Resources During Election Season

Stephen Fearing (Guilford Park Presbyterian, Greensboro) has recently written a four-week sermon series called “Loving Your Neighbor in an Election Season” with liturgy, hymn suggestions, and sermon prompts. He has made this resource in preparation for his D.Min. project as well as in coordination with the Wisconsin Council of Churches. Stephen would like to share this resource with the presbytery. Even if a church is not doing a dedicated sermon series to the topic, the prayers can be adapted and used in any context/service. Follow the link below for the entire resource.

Announcement on Welcome Corps

The Biden-Harris Administration successfully rebuilt the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. Now it needs your help!

Thousands of refugees overseas have been fully vetted and approved and are waiting to travel to the United States. To help welcome them, the Administration launched the Welcome Corps to enable Americans from all walks of life to sponsor refugees and Afghan SIVs. The Welcome Corps expands our nation’s ability to welcome refugees and strengthens the bonds within communities.

Through the Welcome Corps, groups of five or more Americans join together to sponsor a refugee family for their first few months in the United States, welcoming them at the airport and helping them find housing, access refugee benefits, and apply for jobs. Each sponsor group is paired with an expert in refugee resettlement who guides them through the entire process.

We’re asking you to please share this program with your networks, and we have resources to help. Thanks to private funding from the Sponsor Fund, any group who signs up to participate in the Welcome Corps by August 31 can receive a grant to cover the cost of sponsoring a refugee or Afghan SIV family that they do not already know.

Contact organizations@welcomecorps.org for tailored assistance with getting the word out to your community. If you have questions, please reach out to Margaret.M.O'Herron@who.eop.gov or Madalene.Smith-Huemer@nsc.eop.gov.

A recent study published by the Religion and Social Change Lab of Duke Divinity School reported that our congregations within The United Methodist Church in North Carolina are theologically and politically diverse, thus creating a “purple church” which reflects our deep diversity. However, the study also painted a picture of the hopeful future that our diversity presents, as stated in the following:

Mainline protestant churches, like those in the UMC and PCUSA remain some of the very few institutions in American society where people from different political persuasions can build deep and meaningful relationships with each other. In a polarized and often toxic political climate, our congregations are positioned to advance the ministry of Jesus by creating a beloved community that bridges political and theological divides.

The months surrounding the upcoming elections this fall present a ripe opportunity for our faithful witness as Christians in how we build these deep and meaningful relationships that shape the Beloved Community in the face of political and theological divides.

To help build these communities of shalom where all people are of sacred worth, safe, and growing toward spiritual, physical, and emotional wholeness, the Peace Building Ministries of the Western North Carolina Conference of the UMC offers the Purple Church Initiative.

Flower Bulb Fund-Raiser at Elkin Presbyterian

Are you or members of your church going to be buying bulbs this fall to plant for spring? Want to buy bulbs and help hungry kids in our Presbytery? Every month, Elkin Presbyterian Church works with their local school districts to send bags of food home to ensure students who qualify for meal programs have something to eat over the weekend. This cost the Church $7000+ dollars a year (they have around 100 members at this Church). If you purchase bulbs from this site (which guarantees 100% satisfaction) they will be delivered to your door and half of the funds will help keep this food program going! Please make sure to select Elkin Presbyterian from the list of non-profits. Thank you!
