Madness

As you read this, the basketball world—and pretty much everyone who is electronically connected to anything—is still in the midst of March Madness, a time when we traditionally reflect on the existential question: Is there such a thing as too much basketball? (Hint: there isn’t one right answer; Kirsten’s answer is definitely different than mine.)

For us in the church world, this March has been a little crazy too. Easter was yesterday. And while Easter, Holy Week, and the entire season of Lent are always a deeply moving spiritual experience, they also constitute the busiest time of the church year. March has indeed been a little mad.

But, as mad as March has been, we all know the time when things get really crazy: May. If you asked someone on the street when is the busiest time of the year, they might tell you Christmas. But for my money, the busiest time is May Madness. As the school year wraps up, it seems as if the schools schedule virtually every remotely school-related event and award. And, just to keep things interesting, the school administrators spend most of the rest of the year inventing new events and awards to cram into May’s end-of-school frenzy. All of which cascades from the parents and grandparents with school-aged kids to the rest of society. I’m already getting exhausted just thinking about May.

But May isn’t just a month, it’s a state of mind. The hurry and worry and stress of May has crept not only into otherwise innocuous months—like July—but into our culture as a whole, and into our lives. Most of us, if we’re honest with ourselves, are exhausted most of the time. And it’s killing us, both physically and spiritually.

That’s why, starting April 14th, we begin a new sermon series based on John Mark Comer’s book, “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.” The Sunday School classes will be following along with the sermon series, so if you aren’t already in one and would like to follow along, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind you joining in. Or if you’d like to follow along by yourself, you can order the book most anywhere. In either case, I cannot stress enough the importance of the message of this book and this series for all of us living in post-COVID, pre-May, 21st century Salado, Texas. I look forward to spending this time with you.

UMARMY.net | Online Mission Experience Management

The Salado United Methodist Church would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all who donated, served, and attended the Wild Game Dinner that benefits local, regional, and international missions. Many businesses in Salado and nearby cities donated items and money to add to the success of this event. Many thanks to Mike and Linda Cornet at Tenroc Ranch for providing a picturesque venue. Also, our thanks go to the businesses and individuals who gave small or large, to the participants who bid selflessly and joyfully, and to all the committed volunteers who gave an incredible amount of their personal time, money, and patience to organize and operate the event. Thank you to the cooking teams for all the food prepared went above and beyond the call of duty, as there was an abundance of dishes: meats, side dishes, salads, and desserts! Wow, truly amazing. May the people who receive benefit from us this year, grow in their faith and trust in our Loving God.

Sincerely,

Rolly Correa, Director of Missions & Outreach
