40 YEARS OF BREAD & LIFE

A Message From Executive Director Sister Caroline Tweedy, RSM

Dear Friends,

The German philosopher Meister Eckhart said, “If the only prayer we ever say is thank you, it will be enough” echoes in my soul. I can’t thank all of you enough for the support you provided this past year. Because of YOU we have accomplished so much together-serving record numbers of guests, distributing more food than ever, expanding our Mobile Market and Resource Sharing program, relaunching our mobile soup kitchen and providing thousands of hot grab and go meals to hungry neighbors, this coupled with our expert case management team responded proactively to those in need of emergency support.

September is Hunger Action Month and as funding becomes tighter, inflation rises, and the needs continue to grow, be assured that Bread and Life will be here to serve the community. I hope that you will join with me in fighting hunger by support our 2nd Annual Fill the Truck Campaign by clicking on the link below. Every dollar raised goes directly to our emergency food programs. Last year, Bread and Life shattered all records by distributing more than 4 million meals, 5 million pounds of food and a record 1.5 million pounds of produce. 66,000 families accessed our food pantry regularly, 40,000 guests visited one of the 20 mobile market sites and 163,000 guests received hot grab and go meals throughout the year. These numbers far exceeded our expectations and yet, together with our donors, we were able to meet the demands.

As we continue to celebrate our 40th Anniversary year, we know that the path in front of us is becoming more and more challenging but we know that together we can combat Covid with compassionate, dignified services.

As Coretta Scott King so eloquently stated, “ the greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate action of its members.”

With gratitude,

Sr. Caroline Tweedy, RSM

Executive Director

2022 At A Glance

Throughout the past year, our front-line team has worked hard to ensure that no one in need of food was ever turned away from our doors.

More than 269,000 people were served from July 2021 through June 2022 – 40,000 through our Mobile Market program, 66,000 households through our food pantry, and thousands more through our grab-and-go hot meal program and the mobile soup kitchen.

We distributed 4 million meals, 5 million pounds of food and more than 1.5 million pounds of fresh produce. We touched more than 22 communities in Brooklyn and Queens and supported the creative efforts of our friends who ran the local Community Fridge Programs.

Our efforts stretched from Far Rockaway to Coney Island to Red Hook and Bedford Stuyvesant. Wherever the need was greatest, you could find our staff doing their part to fight hunger in our community.

As funding is reduced we know it will be harder for us to continue to serve the number of guests who come to us each day. So I ask you to consider supporting our Fill the Truck Campaign which celebrates our 40th Anniversary and ensures that no one will go hungry in our community.

In Memoriam

Bread and Life lost a champion in June with the death of our dear friend Joe

Martino. Joe has been one of the longest-serving members of the board of

directors and a member emeritus for many years. Joe and his wife Antoinette

supported Bread and Life beginning with its founding in 1982.

Joe will always be known as the Bread Man and our #1 Cheerleader. As Joe

used to say, if you are a friend of mine you are a potential volunteer. To those who remembered Joe with a gift to us we thank you and the Martino family for their dedication to us and the people served by Bread and Life.
