HSC Tuesday Tips - Safety Snippets
National Safety Month
Here at HSC, we know that safety is no accident! That means safety is always a priority.

National Safety Month is a great time to review safety plans & processes and make sure everyone is properly trained.
Making Safety a Part of your Company Culture
Prioritizing production is important, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of safety. Disabling safety mechanisms or removing PPE to gain a productivity bump can be expensive in the long run due the costs associated with unnecessary injuries. Safety and profitability go hand in hand!
So, how do you create a company culture that includes safe practices?
  1. Set organizational, departmental, or individual safety goals and celebrate achieving those goals. Reward safe practices and behaviors.
  2. Provide ongoing training to workers that addresses risk inherent to your workplace and to their specific roles. Repeat training as needed if supervisors notice a lack of understanding or compliance.
  3. Create a clear process for reporting and responding to safety concerns and incidents. Ensure that employees understand that their observations are welcome and they will not be ignored or penalized for expressing their concerns.
  4. Make employees at all levels of the organization responsible for safety. Workers, supervisors, and managers should all be invested in and responsible for their own safety and the safety of those around them. Management should demonstrate a commitment to safety in their daily acts so that workers understand that safety behavior is truly valued.
By effectively making safety a part of your company culture, you demonstrate that the well-being of employees is important. This can improve employee morale and loyalty, which has been demonstrated to increase productivity. Combine that with decreasing operational costs associated with injuries and absences, and a safety culture in your organization can be a long-term strategy for increased profitability.
