While the kids are singing “let it snow,” we know that snow and ice often contain hidden hazards. How do we avoid slips, trips, and falls in winter weather?
Clear pathways and work areas of snow and ice as soon as possible.
After clearing as much as possible, use salt, sugar beet juice, or a commercial, environmentally-friendly deicer to melt ice.
Increase traction by applying gritty substances, such as sand, kitty litter, or sawdust.
Wear appropriate footwear, such as rubber-soled boots with heavy treads.
Slow down and take smaller steps. Three points of contact are more important than ever in icy conditions!
Elevated work areas may become icy and hazardous faster than the ground. Inspect ladders, scaffolding, and other elevated work areas regularly to ensure that they may be utilized safely.
Use floor fans, absorbent mats, and wet floor signs at every entrance, and remain observant when coming inside to avoid sliding on wet, slippery surfaces.
Don’t slip up this winter! Stay warm and safe!
