Safe Routes to Schools Moves Forward

Note: The Superintendent's Update will return December 9, 2013
Dr. Jeffrey GrahamThe Parma City School District has been approved to move forward with its Safe Routes to School (SRTS) application--a funding opportunity with the potential to bring more than $500,000 annually for up to five years to our District. SRTS is a federal program administered by the Ohio Department of Transportation, which allows school districts to apply for money to improve and encourage students to walk and bike to schools safely.

The next step is to develop a School Travel Plan (STP) which focuses on the "Five E's." These are Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Encouragement, and Evaluation. Up to $500,000 may be granted for engineering projects such as sidewalks, crossing, walkways, etc. Up to $50,000 may be granted for the remaining "E's," such as student and community education projects.

Parent and community input will be an important part of this process. Surveys will be sent home to parents to gather information about students walking and biking to school throughout the year. A site review will be conducted in early December, providing program administrators with an opportunity to observe the dismissal periods of the schools with the highest number of walkers and bikers in the district. A public meeting will be scheduled in January, 2014 to discuss the School Travel Plan.

This is an incredible opportunity to improve the safety of our students. I want to personally applaud the committee of individuals which is making this happen for our students. It is through the collaboration of parents, school personnel, architects, and representatives of the cities we serve that this project is coming to fruition. During this week of thanks, your work deserves ample recognition.

On behalf of the Parma City Schools and students and families we serve, thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeffrey Graham

Keeping You Connected in the PCSD

The Parma City School District has contracted with a new instant notification system to improve parental outreach, emergency broadcasts, and other communications for education. The SchoolMessenger system is designed to automatically notify parents for reasons that impact the safety and academic performance of students, including snow days.

To ensure that you receive messages throughout the year, it is important that you as a parent or guardian notify your school if your phone number changes, and to keep your contact information updated in the Home Access Center. Learn more...
