EVENT RESCHEDULED

Mercy & Justice Movie Discussion: Rustin

Now Sunday, February 18

4:30-7:00PM | FLC Garrison Chapel

We have rescheduled this special screening of Rustin, a 2023 biopic, that tells the story of Bayard Rustin, the key organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, an event that is considered one of the high points of the Civil Rights movement. A committed and charismatic leader, Rustin faced homophobia and his role in the March on Washington has long been sidelined. Rediscover this hidden hero of the Civil Rights movement in community as we screen the PG-13-rated movie together and host a discussion following the film. Pizza and snacks provided. Join us for this important conversation during Black History Month. For more information, email Pastor Cathy Stone.

CANCELLED AND RESCHEDULED

MLK Day Community March

Stories from the Civil Rights Pilgrimage

Sunday, January 14

10:00AM | Sanctuary

Praying your way through a cotton warehouse where enslaved Black people were forced to labor in bondage, walking in the footsteps of John Lewis across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, bearing witness to the Black lives lost to lynching and other forms of racial terror...these are just a few of the experiences of those on the 2023 Civil Rights Pilgrimage. Leaning into this faith community’s values of justice and active learning, last fall these pilgrims made stops in Selma, Montgomery, and Birmingham, Alabama, and Jackson, Mississippi. Come hear their stories and learn why this experience is more than a trip; it is a pilgrimage of personal and spiritual growth as one encounters God in the pain and resilience of our collective past and present. Pastor Cathy Stone will also have information about the 2024 Civil Rights Pilgrimage.

Deep Dive: The Epistle to the Galatians

Wednesdays, January 17, 24, 31 and February 7 | 6:00-7:15PM | Zoom

Deep Dive, a chance to delve into a particular scripture passage in short-term study, returns in the new year with an exploration of Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. This letter to the early church is a shorter piece focused on what the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection means for gentiles living far beyond the communities and faith traditions of the people to whom Jesus directly ministered. Dig into the text with Pastor Brad King, explore some of the deepest history of our faith, and wrestle in community with the unanswerable questions that scripture invites us not to solve, but to consider. Zoom link sent with registration.

FEAST: The Bible and History

Sunday, January 28 | 6:30-8:30PM

FLC Garrison Chapel

The Bible includes plenty of “bad” history—for example, Earth is much more than 6000 years old— but that is not because its authors did not know or did not care about what happened. Sometimes, they didn’t have great sources; other times, they weren’t interested in a strict timeline. And, of course, sometimes they just got it wrong. Join us on Sunday, January 28, for food, fellowship, and to grapple with these important questions. Dinner is provided for those who register by Saturday, January 27. Doors open at 6:30PM and the conversation starts at 7:00PM.

JANUARY MISSION EMPHASIS

Our January mission emphasis is the Immigration Care Team (ICT), a ministry offering active support and provision to asylum seekers and other immigrants.

ICT began in 2020 when we sponsored an asylum seeker from a Central African country who was being held in a detention center at the Texas Border. Our ongoing care has ensured her a safe space to live, food and other necessities, access to legal representation, and English instruction. After more than three years in Austin, this woman received her work permit and is now employed at a restaurant. She recently moved to another state to live with a family member and is able to contribute to her rent and other expenses.

Together, we have walked with her as she learned a new language, adjusted to a new country, and became more independent and self-sufficient. In this new year, we are grateful to continue walking beside her, providing a monthly subsidy to help cover the cost of her rent, utilities, and food as she continues to build a life for herself. What a joy it has been to be a part of her journey!

Contributions to the Immigration Care Team help us offer this support any legal costs that arise for our asylum seeker, while also providing occasional funds to meet the emergent needs of other immigrants and asylum seekers. Your gifts marked “Immigration Care Team” may be placed in the offering basket during worship, mailed to or brought by the church office, or made online using the button below. Please select “Immigration Care Team” from the drop-down menu.
