SPRING BREAK - APRIL 1ST - 5TH NO SCHOOL

Message from the Principal

Second semester is well underway. Just last week we awarded hundreds of Honor Roll certificates and donuts to our hardworking Thunderbirds!

We are embarking upon some of the busiest months of the year. Last week Mrs. Steele and I were in classrooms reteaching expectations as part of our PBIS plan. We have also been registering students for next year's classes and visiting elementary schools to meet with our rising 6th graders.

In the coming weeks we have a lot to look forward to - Spirit Week is happening next week and we have a RAD (Reward Activity Day) for all students who have achieved Gold status on their Middle School Matters Rubric on March 29th. Please continue to check power school and encourage your child to attend SAT (Student Access Time) with their teachers if they need additional support or help.

IMPORTANT - Upcoming....

REGISTRATION SEASON FOR THE 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR :

We have had a very busy and successful registration season! It was wonderful to see so many future 6th and 7th Grade Thunderbird families here for our Curriculum Fair. We have also had Lewis and Clark and Ferris High School counselors visit Sac to register rising 9th graders, Sacajawea counselors visit every 6th and 7th grade Social Studies class to register our rising 7th and 8th graders, and just last week Mrs. Leyde and Mr. Smith went on the 5th Grade “Road Show” to register our rising 6th graders!

If your student missed their registration date, please contact your grade level counselor – they will be working with students who have not yet registered. Additionally, you can find registration information on our website: www.sacthunderbirds.com and click the 2024-25 Registration button – presentations and resources from our Curriculum Fair as well as registration forms and course catalog are all found here!

SAC February/March Penny Drive

WHAT IS JOYA?

  • Joya is a non-profit that provides an exceptional early-intervention program for infants and toddlers impacted by developmental disabilities and delays. We serve families based on what their child needs, not on what they can afford to pay.
  • The need for Joya’s early intervention services has increased by 73% in Spokane County since 2014 and Joya continues to serve more children every year.
  • Developmental delays introduce expense, complication, and stress into the lives of new parents. Many families face mounting medical bills and gaps in insurance coverage. As families work to get back on their feet in the aftermath of layoffs and reduced hours tied to the COVID-19 crisis, we expect that more families will be unable to pay toward unfunded care.

Every cent that is donated to Joya today ensures infants and toddlers with special needs will continue to thrive tomorrow.

Pesticide Application Alert!

This is to inform you that our annual dormant oil spray will be applied to the trees and shrubs at our school on Monday, March 18th. This spray application consists of one gallon of mineral oil mixed in 80 gallons of water to cover and kill dormant insect eggs that overwinter in our area. Our school has taken steps to keep school children away from these areas for 24 hours following the application of spray. We would like to ask that you and your children refrain from brushing up against or playing around the trees and shrubs at our school. A variation from this schedule may occur as a result of inclement weather. Thank you!

NEWS & INFORMATION

FROM THE OFFICE

LOST & FOUND: Please consider putting your child's name on all personal items brought to school. This includes coats, jackets, gloves, backpacks, water bottles, etc. Basically, anything you would like to come home with them. We have a extra-large number of items that are not claimed and are donated every month or two to a local charity. If your child's name is on an item it will help us get it back to them instead. Our lost and found is located at the back of the cafeteria commons.

REMINDERS:

IF your student will be absent or late, for any reason, please call our 24hr Attendance Hotline at 509-354-5515 by 9:00 a.m. Leave us a message with your student’s name, clearly spelling out their last name, how long your student will be out, and the reason for their absence.

If your student has an appointment-please call the day before or send in a note so we can plan ahead with a dismissal pass to avoid disrupting the classroom. Students who have a pre-authorized pass will be released from class to meet you outside at the time you indicate. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

The earlier you can notify when your student will be absent or needs an early dismissal, the less disruptive it is for teachers and students.

ATHLETICS & EXTRACURRICULAR

We are happy to have a robust array of extracurricular opportunities for all students at all three grade levels. Studies show that students who regularly participate in extracurricular activities surpass their peers in academic performance and learn valuable skills such as time management, setting goals, teamwork, and contribution/connection to community. We hope that each one of our Thunderbirds finds something of interest to participate in. This list showcases all of our current Athletic and Club offerings this year. New additions/edits since this was last communicated to students and families are highlighted in yellow. A few current highlights:

INTERESTED IN BEING A CHEERLEADER?

LCHS cheer is hosting a free skills clinic where your athletes will learn the basics of cheerleading-jumps, kicks, a cheer, and basic cheer motions. 8th graders who are planning to attend LC next year and are interested in cheerleading can attend one or both days. The clinics are being held at Lewis and Clark High School commons on March 5th from 4-5:30 and March 11th from 6-7:30.

PTG CORNER

If you haven't already done so, please sign up here to receive PTG-specific news: https://forms.gle/ta2wsJmJKyj398aC9. It is a different email system than those sent from the school, and it will only take a couple of minutes to provide your information. Thank you!

As we near the end of the year, please let us know if you might be interested in stepping into the two open executive board positions: Volunteer Coordinator and Member at Large. Both are not time-intensive and give parents a chance to have a voice in how money and time is spent on our kids. Reach out if you are interested! The CAC (Citizens Advisory Committee) position will also be vacant, but it is not a board position. Additionally, shadowing opportunities lie within the role of President, Treasurer and Secretary for the 24-25 school year.

Flower baskets will be available to order starting💐 in March and will be delivered before Mother's Day. Be on the lookout for an email with more details, including pricing and how to order. These make great gifts!

Nearly 450 students made Q2 honor roll. A huge thank you goes to Alliant Insurance for sponsoring donuts for the celebrations throughout the year!

Our next PTG meeting is Wednesday, March 20 @ 12:00 PM. Please join us either in-person in room 107, or virtually via Teams. The link can be found on our website at www.sacthunderbirds.com under the About tab and then click on Parent Group. We understand that noon on a weekday is a hard time for many, so be sure to sign up to receive emails to stay in the know about PTG happenings!

Community Partners

About our Community Partner's Program..... We would appreciate you partnering with us in supporting the PBIS program at Sacajawea. There are 2 ways to participate and help the Sacajawea community.

  1. We ask that businesses pick one month of the school year to sponsor our PBIS program, with a suggested donation of $100.  When your business sponsors a month of PBIS, it will be recognized in Sacajawea “News You Can Use” email with a link to your businesses’ website. This email gives your business exposure to the families of the 800+ students enrolled at Sacajawea. We will also advertise your business for an entire month on our brand new Sacajawea Middle School electronic reader board.
  2. Other businesses provide us with rewards and tangible goods for students and staff.

If you are a business owner and would like to partner with us by contributing to our Sacajawea family with donations of time or resources please email Laura Treece at laurat@spokaneschools.org
