From your Proud Principal

Clarence Pollock

We will be celebrating Black History Month with an All School Assembly on Monday. February 27th at 9:00 AM.  We are excited for our school community to come together for this wonderful event as we recognize that Black History is American History and is something to learn about all year long, not just in February.

As part of the program, we will be highlighting the importance and achievements of HBCUs (Historic Black Colleges and Universities) and some of their accomplished graduates.  We are asking, if at all possible, for students to wear the following colors that represent the HBCU that has been designated for their grade level on Monday, February 27th:

  • Kindergarten ~ Morehouse College - Maroon and White
  • First Grade ~ Spelman College - Light Blue and White
  • Second Grade ~ Hampton University - Royal Blue and White
  • Third Grade ~ Howard University- Blue and Red
  • Fourth Grade ~ Tennessee State University - Blue and White
  • Fifth Grade ~ Fisk University - Blue and Gold

This joyful celebration will also feature music, singing and the brilliance of our Black students as they share their talents and present about famous and inspirational Black leaders. We are grateful for this opportunity to live out our St. Louis Park Schools Mission, Vision and Values. Our school is a place where students are seen and valued and become their best selves as racially conscious, globally minded contributors to society.

A Big Thank You to the Assembly Team ~ Angela Davis, Lindsey Hill, Elizabeth Guzman, Becky Phelan, Arsenio Richardson, Maurna Rome, Jody Stefonowicz and Joe Thomas. Thank you all!

February 22nd was School Bus Appreciation Day

Governor Walz announced that February 22, 2023 is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day! The 35 W bridge will be lit up in “school bus yellow” to commemorate the day and school bus drivers across Minnesota will receive a declaration letter stating the Governor’s appreciation for their good work.

Our partners at Park Adam Transportation have the important job of safely transporting students to and from school each day. Drivers are some of the first people who interact with students each day and their engagement is essential to starting the school day off strong. Please take a moment to share your appreciation with school bus drivers next week!

The Book Fair Continues Online!

The Book Fair was a great success!  With over $5,000 sold, we earned over $2,500 in Scholastic Dollars for the Media Specialist to use towards online programs and book purchases for students/teachers. This surpassed our 2020 total!  Additionally, teachers were thrilled to receive new books off their wishlists, purchased by families at the book fair.

Didn’t make it to the Book Fair?  You can still order books online and 25% of all proceeds in the month of February go back to the Media Center!

Thank you to Allison Yem and Greta Hanson for chairing the Book Fair for the past 5 years! We are so grateful to you both for sharing your love of books with our school community!

On that note, Allison and Greta will be stepping back and are ready to train-in the next Book Fair chairs!  Do you love books? Looking for a fun way to give back to school?  Email Meghan and Heather at susanlindgrenpto@gmail.com to get more details about the Book Chair position and see if it's the right fit for you!
