i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year in reading and in math. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction so they grow in these areas throughout their school year.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an online adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions based on student responses. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.
These assessments are given three times a year - the baseline diagnostic now, diagnostic 2 in January - measuring mid-year growth, diagnostic 3 in May - measuring end of year growth.
To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, please:
- Make sure your child is in school during the diagnostic period.
- Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast the day of the assessment.
- Encourage your child, particularly the older students, to take the diagnostic very seriously and try their best on each question.
- Remind your students that it is expected they will get only about half of the questions correct - not knowing an answer is a good thing on this assessment!.
We will begin using the data we receive immediately to tailor our instruction - and your child's online i-Ready Learning Path - immediately. We will be sharing your child's diagnostic data and their progress with you at Parent Teacher conferences in October. The goal is not a performance score, but growth - ideally making "Annual Typical Growth" for their grade based on their baseline diagnostic. Students will be learning about their own growth - and the impact of their learning - within their ELA and math classes.
If you have any questions about i-Ready, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher. You can also learn more about i-Ready by visiting i-ReadyCentral.com/FamilyCenter.
Sincerely,
Mary
