JEWISH MONTREAL UNDERRATED
By:  Suri Stern
This was my third time to Montreal.  Honestly, I was eight the first time I went with my family.  It was right after the '72 Olympics, and it was the IMAX movie that impressed me most.
My second trip to Montreal was in my '20s.  I surprised my Montreal friend and appeared.  She took me down the Lachine rapids and introduced me to Montreal bagels, and I fell in love with both.
I was looking for an easy and inexpensive road trip with my 13 year old, who was not in camp this summer, and he decided he wanted Montreal.  Let's just say as a solo driver the 7 ½ hour drive to Montreal was no picnic.  In all truth, it was a luscious foliage trip, and I ached to have the time to stop along the way, in Boston, Lake George, Saratoga Springs, Ausuble Chasm, I just didn't have the days to spare, alas...it makes me more committed to return when I have more time on my hands, it is a treasure trove of fun, European charm and culture and natural beauty.
We left at 1pm, and arrived at our hotel at 8:45pm.  Just understand that congestion in the New York metro area and particularly coming out of the 5T is gruesome, no matter what day or time of day.  It took me two hours just to cross the GW bridge, midday with no ostensible reason for delay.  Traffic was slowed again at 5pm around Albany for all the government workers leaving work at the end of their work day, and then again and border control on the way in to Canada.
The first thing that hit me was the speed limit sign.  Not less than 60km but not greater than 100km.  I learned metrics in third grade, I can barely remember the number of children I have, let alone the metric system.  1.5 km to exit 53, is that 3 miles or less than 1 mile, is km less than or greater than miles?
We arrived at our hotel, ate some dinner brought from home, relaxed and went to sleep.  I couldn't wait to introduce my son to my fondest memory of Montreal, jetboating down the level 4 Lachine rapids.  We weren't disappointed.  He was screaming for more water in his face, and I thought my cheeks were going to crack from smiling watching him enjoy it even more than I thought that he would.
We finished our boating at 1:30, and we went to the highly regarded Pizzapita.  My son ordered a poutine slice, and I ordered poutine, as I was on a mission sent by my sister to find the best poutine in Montreal and report back.  The trick is the gravy.  For those who don't know, poutine is French fries smothered in gravy and cheese.  Therein lies the difficulty.  With what do you thicken and flavor the gravy if you are going to put cheese on top and it has to be kosher.  Well Pizzapita figured it out because it was delicious.  It has pizza, ice cream, waffles, crepes, falafels and more.  6415 DeCarie Blvd, Montreal.
We came back to the hotel and decided to spend time determining what to have for dinner and to plan in detail what to do the next day.  In truth, there are plenty of activities for adults and children to partake of.
Of the more than dozen kosher eating establishments in Montreal...let me digress here.  I found the Chabad list of kosher establishments and incredibly they include a dozen restaurants, a dozen take out food establishments and a dozen kosher bakers!!!  That is more than we have in the five towns, and in truth, a visit to the Jewish museum in Montreal, will give you a deep understanding of how very entrenched the Jews are in Montreal, BUT HERE IS THE KICKER.
The Jewish Museum of Montreal has a Beyond the Bagel Kosher walking tour of Montreal.  That was the number two item on my son and my wish list, BUT the walking tour takes you to unkosher restaurants.  OH REALLY?  How can Montreal have so many kosher restaurants and this walking tour takes its visitors to non-kosher restaurants?  Ridiculous.  Disappointing.
We visited Mt. Royal, which has a breathtaking overlook of the City of Montreal.  Quite lovely.  It is really hopping and bopping there when the Jazz Festival visits at the beginning of July.  We missed it.
We went to Meditteraneo, a new steakhouse.  My son's burger was done tastefully with a spicy aioli, and my Veal and pasta dish with home made sauce was perfect.  Then it dawned on me.  One side of the room were modern Orthodox, the other was Yeshivish/Chasidishe.  It was a Wednesday and the restaurant was packed.  There was a healthy diversity in the restaurant, and the community was sustaining a "lavish" number of kosher establishments, and I wondered why we New Yorkers don't capitalize on our proximity to Montreal.
How often I hear people who go to Florida because it is close and they have kosher restaurants and minyanim.  Here we have Montreal in our backyard, a mere 45 mins by plane, and we don't capitalize on it.  Furthermore, what does one do in Florida but sit on a lounge chair and eat.  Montreal is stunning and cosmopolitan and replete with culture, museums, shows, concerts, history, the Old Port, which is like what Greenwich Village was like when I was growing up.
But another thought crossed my mind when I saw some Bais Yaakov girls walk into the restaurant.  Why aren't we making shidduchim between our communities, we are so very close and similar, we should find out about Montreal and their untapped resources.
The owner of Meditteraneo introduced herself to us.  I told her I was from the Five Towns in New York and she looked at me blankly.  I asked her if she knew of the Five Towns, and she said she never heard of us!!!  Am I deluding myself into thinking that all Jewish communities around the world, but certainly in New York's backyard, have heard of the Five Towns, and yet this seems not to be so.  I was dumbfounded.  It gave me true pause.  She had to move on, but I wanted to know if she knew of Lakewood and Boro Park, and if we were the lone anamoly, but she was busy.
We New Yorkers are geocentric, but nothing as compared with Five Towners, who think we are just the epicenter of the world, or at least of the Orhtodox Jewish universe.  Maybe we need to help ease the shidduch crisis by marketing ourselves to other Jewish communities outside our immediate areas.  True, there are thoughts that single people who are committed to a geographic area want to meet others who are like-minded.  But there are others, certainly, who are geographically open-minded.  It would be great if our community shadchanim could meet shadchanim from other communities.  Leftovers in one house, is fresh food in another.
I digress by my excitement at the thought of Montreal as our backyard neighbor with so many varied possibilities.
Our second and last day in Montreal saw thunderstorms/rainstorms, but no fear, there is plenty to do inside.  There is a plethora of cultural institutions in Montreal, art, music, you name it.  It does not interest my son.  But a trip to the old Olympic Park is tres exciting to him.  They have converted the exhibition halls of the Olympics into different exciting attractions.  One building is an observatory with a view of Quebec.  It is with a funicular that you enter this observatory.
In the park there is a Biodome, done so cleverly, each room representing a different climate, tropical, polar and everything in between.
The Planetarium is technologically advanced and we spent hours learning about the solar system.
We brought our own sandwiches so we could have a long day without stopping for food.  We went back to the Old Port of Montreal where we had jetboated the prior day.  We discovered the market, where we bought family-produced maple syrup.  We went to Cirque du Soleil in a high top tent, and it was a spectacular end to a spectacular day and vacation.
We at that night at Le Grill, which is part of the Quality Inn Motel.  Cheap eating, it was okay, prices were good, but nothing to write home about.
We travelled home on a Friday, so we started early.  Miraculously, we made it home in six hours, having hit no traffic.  We both agreed that we wanted to return to see so much more than we had.  It is always good leaving vacay, wanting more.
Great getaway in our backyard.  Thank you Montreal.  Merci.

 By: Rabbi Berel Wein, Rabbiwein.com
There are people in the world who are simply too meddlesome for their own good. As King Solomon points out in Proverbs, they provoke passing dogs and engage in quarrels and controversies that really do not affect them directly. That is the main transgression of Balak as described in this week's Torah reading. The Jewish people are not threatening him or his nation. They just happened to be around in the neighborhood and he exploits their presence for his own personal ambition and prejudices.

There is a terrible tendency in human affairs to cloak being a busybody with the aura of altruism and justice. The Talmud decries those who stir up controversies, especially when they are not personally involved or affected by the issue in question. Balak never liked the Jewish people and always looked to eliminate them from living in his neighborhood.

He is aware that currently he is in no danger from them and though they are bypassing his borders, they have no intention of conquering his land. Nevertheless, he picks a fight with the Jewish people, and so to speak, with God Himself and poses as a champion of all of the nations that are threatened by the mere existence of the Jewish people and their right to inherit the land promised to them through their forefathers.

He, with his willing partner Bilaam, devises a scheme to curse the Jewish people and thereby weaken and eventually eliminate them from the scene. But he conceals is animus towards the Jewish people with high-sounding principles and justifiable motives. But in the end, he is simply meddling in matters that do not directly concern him.

We witness this phenomenon in the world today regarding the State of Israel, and by inference, the Jewish people generally. All of the world is concerned with the situation regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. No one seems to be willing to let the parties to this dispute settle the matter by themselves and with themselves. Everyone has plans, roadmaps, and advice as to how to pressure Israel to somehow give in to the unreasonable demands of the Palestinians.

This dispute does not really concern any of the college professors or the do-gooders that lead the BDS movement or any of the other myriad NGOs that badger us constantly. They do not live in this neighborhood of the world nor are they subject to the constant dangers that surround Israeli society day in and day out.

They glorify their meddling in others' affairs by their smug self-righteousness and the: "I know what is good for you, better than you do" that often identifies those who call themselves progressives and liberals.

There are many Balaks and Bilaams in today's world who are concerned about us and basically mean to do us no harm. As are all of the human characters we meet in the Bible, Balak and Bilaam are prototypes of later human beings who exist in all generations and circumstances. Be careful of their benevolence and blessings.

Shabbat shalom

Looking for Ida and Abe Golden

Name: Michael weinstein

Email:  weinstein1250@comcast.net

Comments: My name is Michael Weinstein. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and am doing extensive genealogy research. I am trying to find out information about a family that lived in the 5 Towns (not sure which community) in the 1940s-1960s. The parents were Ida and Abe Golden. Ida was a niece of my grandmother. They had several children but nobody in my immediate family is sure of their names. Someone thinks one of the names of the kids was Barry Golden. I would appreciate if you could post this notice on a public board so that the Ida and Abe Golden family might ring a bell with someone. Thank you.
