University of New Mexico Inventors Elected Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors
Professor Bryce Chackerian and Professor David Peabody, both from the Department of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology at the University of New Mexico, have been named 2019 Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). The NAI announced today that it has chosen a cohort of 168 inventors from around the world for election as 2019 NAI Fellows.

Comcast Pitch Deck Competition a Success for Young Entrepreneurs
The Comcast Pitch Deck Competition was co-hosted by STC.UNM and the UNM Innovation Academy, the University of New Mexico’s technology-transfer and economic-development organization and entrepreneurial studies program. Sponsored by Comcast and Nusenda Credit Union, the competition offered a platform for student entrepreneurs who want to start or are already operating an early-stage company to present and launch their innovations. Comcast provided a $20,000 prize pool for the five finalists who pitched their innovative ideas and early-stage companies to investor judges before an audience of more than 100 attendees.

Lobo Rainforest Supporters Wall Unveiled
STC.UNM recently unveiled the Lobo Rainforest Supporters wall located in the lobby of the Lobo Rainforest Building. Thanks to the generous contributions of these supporters, the Lobo Rainforest is able to support the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators in helping our community thrive. 

Local Startup on the Cutting Edge of Developing Long-Lasting, High Performance Materials for Solar Panels
Local startup Osazda Energy is commercializing solar cell technology jointly developed at the University of New Mexico and the Air Force Research Laboratory-New Mexico by UNM Regents’ Professor Sang M. Han and his team, and AFRL Senior Physicist David Wilt. Osazda, a New Mexico Angels Start-Up Factory II-funded company, is developing innovative new materials that improve the efficiency and life of solar cells and panels for the photovoltaic market.

Justin Baca, MD, PhD
Dr. Baca’s research focuses on developing point-of-care diagnostics and devices. As a practicing emergency medicine physician with a research background in analytical chemistry, he works with a broad range of clinicians, scientist, and engineers to develop and test new technologies in a clinical setting. His recent work includes developing a hand-held sensor for rapid detection of Ebola virus, developing a device to aid in transporting bariatric patients, and developing an autonomous autoinjector to reverse opioid overdose.

Podcast Devoted to STEM Issues in the Southwest Features NM Engineer and STC Board Chair
STC Board Chair and renewable energy engineer Sandra Begay is featured on Stem Southwest ( http://stemsw.com/), a podcast developed by Bob and Shelly Gruenig, longtime robotics educators and coaches. The podcast was born out of a desire to create STEM connections, cohesion, and elevation within the Southwest region of the United States.

UNM Rainforest Forum - Advanced Economic Development Leadership Program
The University of New Mexico is now a partner university of the Advanced Economic Development Leadership Program (AEDL), a nationwide alliance of five major universities offering an advanced economic-development leadership course for mid- and senior-level economic development professionals.

The University of Alabama, Clemson University, The University of Southern Mississippi, TCU, and UNM will share more about the program during a panel discussion at the next UNM Rainforest Forum on January 16, 2020, 11:30am-1:00pm at the Lobo Rainforest.
STC will be closed in observance of UNM’s Winter Break Holiday beginning December 23 through January 1. STC will re-open on Thursday, January 2.
