MINISTRY APPRECIATION WEEKEND

This Appreciation note is for ALL of YOU, please read.

For many years the word volunteer has been used for those who help out when a need arises for someone to step up and help, I am using a different word.

Thank You to all of you members of St. Thomas Becket for how you have been ministers. A minister is one who gives aid or service. I appreciate all those who serve in the ministries of our community of STB, all those who minister to their families, neighbors and friends, and those who reach out to the local and international community sharing their gifts.

Thank You to all those who share in our worship, through your presence,  your prayer, participating in person or through our livestream Masses.

I appreciate all that you do for STB by living out our Mission Statement: To Love, To Serve, To Be Hope. Jesus reminds us he came to serve, not to be served.

You have kept that message alive by how you have ministered to others and been the presence of Jesus.

With deep Gratitude,

Fr. Tim

God of Easter and Spring, you roll the stone from the tomb

and allow the miracle of resurrection that rises from the earth each spring

in tulips, lilies, grass, and leaves to bless our color-starved eyes.

We ask you to bless the deep miracles of the many ministries that you call forth

from the people of St. Thomas Becket who in countless ways seek the love of God

and find it in the generosity of ministers  who become the instruments of

God’s kingdom here and now. Amen.

WRITE A BIRTHDAY CARD

MAY 21

Do you enjoy encouraging others through special

occasion cards or short notes?

Most inmates do not regularly receive mail and many of their birthdays are not acknowledged. Receiving mail brings great joy to a prisoner, and to be

acknowledged on a day that is special to them can restore hope.

Please join us at St. Thomas Becket from 4:30-6:00 on Tuesday, May 21st.

Please come any amount of time and write as many cards as you wish.

Thank you for considering.

50th ANNIVERSARY OF

ORDINATION AS A PRIEST

JUNE 1

Celebrating Fr. Kevin

Come celebrate Fr. Kevin Clinton’s 50th Anniversary of Ordination as a Priest on June 1st at the 5:00 pm Mass.

Fr. Kevin was Ordained June 2nd, 1974, and has been our weekend Priest/Presider for almost 2 years.

There will be a simple reception after the Mass.

He has said there is no expectation of anniversary gifts - your presence is gift enough.

SHE REALLY IS RETIRING

JUNE 2

- JACKIE GRAHAM will be retiring on June 9.

Jackie Graham has ministered in the Archdiocese for 36 years in Liturgy, RCIA and other areas. She has been a member of the staff at St. Thomas Becket for almost 12 years as Liturgical Coordinator & RCIA.

We will celebrate her retirement, and most  importantly her years of service to the church, on June 2 at the 9 & 11am Masses. A reception will take place after both Masses.

We invite all to join in expressing our gratitude to Jackie.

50th ANNIVERSARY OF

I invite you to join me in celebrating the

50th Anniversary

of my Ordination as a Priest

on June 8/9 at the weekend Masses.

A simple reception will be held

at all the Masses.

In lieu of a gift I invite you to donate to one of the following:

CLAMSHELLS AGAIN NEEDED for our Giving Garden!

Our garden is in full swing and growing rapidly. The greenhouse plastic has been off for a couple weeks, and we have already taken three harvests to The Open Door Food Pantry. The photo is of our harvest on May 13th.

We are getting low on the clamshell containers we use to package our organic produce for our food insecure neighbors. There is once again a bin in the Commons for drop-offs:

  • We are in need of all sizes of clamshells.
  • We can only use clamshells which have the lid attached to the base. Two piece containers do not work.
  • Please WASH your clamshells out before dropping them off.
  • No need to peel off the labels - our fluorescent STB Giving Garden labels show up well when placed right on top of the original labels.

Saving and donating your clamshells is a great way to help out our neighbors in need, while giving the plastic at least one more function before it is recycled (hopefully). Thanks in advance for your help!

GOSPEL MEDITATION

ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

May 19, 2024

Pentecost Sunday

When I was twenty-two years of age in August of 2000, I experienced World Youth Day in Rome. As for many of my generation, the event was life-changing for me. Surrounded by joyful, hope-filled young people from seemingly every nation and tongue, we were gathered around the Pope, sharing a common Faith and love. The Pope spoke to us of our shared family bond in the Church and invited us to give our lives in service to others. Now twenty-four years later, my life as a priest, like that of so many others from those special days, continues on that same path of love and unity — despite my many weaknesses. What makes that continuation possible?

This week’s feast gives the answer: the Holy Spirit. The gift of God — His very life — the third person of the Trinity, is the Spirit who animates the entire Church and each member of it. He makes us one-in-love in a way that utterly exceeds human capacity. For example, he makes the apostles speak with tongues of fire, and everyone hears them in his own native tongue. The Holy Spirit is the means by which Jesus establishes a new family, one that crosses all possible boundaries of time, space, and culture. The Holy Spirit never tires in enthusing us for mission.

Aren’t we longing to experience the Holy Spirit in a fresh way? Today we celebrate this untiring flame, once ignited on earth and burning still. So, we humbly cry out: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in us the fire of your love!

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

You Don’t Have What It Takes — but You Will

Those of us in ministry love this saying: God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called.

We all know that sort of queasy feeling we get in the pit of our stomachs when it becomes clear what we’re supposed to do, in any situation. It’s that feeling of: Oh, no. Not me. Not now. I can’t.

We’ve all got our list of reasons why not, don’t we? We do it for everything, from big life problems to small everyday choices. I’m not going to invite my neighbor to church because I don’t want to come across as pushy. I’m not going to make amends with my cousin because she’ll just walk all over me again. I’m not going to say a Rosary tonight because I’m tired and it’ll just stress me out.

However, even if we all put our lists of “reasons why we can’t” together, I don’t think any of us have reasons quite as valid as the apostles. Their job was to convert the nations — and here they are, a bunch of fishermen who haven’t been out of Judea, who speak only their own languages. Were they supposed to preach the Gospel via a particularly compelling game of charades?

But even that big, giant, stop-you-dead-in-your tracks Reason Why We Can’t was nothing, because God had a plan. He didn’t call a bunch of equipped men. He called them, and He equipped them. Cue the tongues of fire!

God doesn’t call us to do His will because we have what it takes. He calls us because He’s ready to give us what it takes. Being a good steward is to answer the call of Christ knowing he will provide.
