March 2024 Newsletter

STAR Development Update

On February 19, we ceremoniously broke ground on STAR lots 2 and 3. We are excited that we have begun work, with a strong foundation in place. Future homeowners Kee Kee and Heather are excited to see the progress! See pictures from the event here.

We have 3 homes currently under construction. If you, a business, or an organization, would like to consider volunteering, there is availability. The summer is wide open, and waiting for you to sign up! We would love to have your help to keep up the momentum.

Visit our online volunteer portal to sign up. You can also reach out to Amanda Gunter to learn more.

Please consider becoming a financial supporter of this project and of our mission. No donation is too small to help offset these costs and help build a home with an affordable mortgage for 5 families. To make a one-time gift or to set up a monthly recurring gift, please visit hkwhabitat.org/star. All gifts are greatly appreciated.

Ways to Support Habitat

We are honored to be one of four beneficiaries of this year's Hanover Night At The Diamond. The Rotary Club of Mechanicsville, Virginia Foundation and the Richmond Flying Squirrels will welcome Hanover County to The Diamond on Thursday, May 16 for a community night to celebrate Hanover with baseball and fireworks.

Please consider becoming a sponsor and supporting this night at The Diamond and helping Habitat, Five-O's Tiki Foundation, Hanover Safe Place, and The Arc of Hanover. We hope to celebrate with you in May! Learn more at https://ow.ly/7Nbw50QG8yg

The Kroger Co. Family of Stores is committed to bringing hope and helping local neighborhoods. Please link your Kroger rewards card to Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity. Community Rewards is easy to use and the more supporters Habitat has shopping at Kroger, the more money Habitat will earn! Learn how to connect your account online.

Habitat Programs & Homeowner Support

Prom is a significant event in the lives of high schoolers. All students should have the availability to attend regardless of their financial situation. The My Princess Project tries to help reduce financial stress through its MPP program. Their Prom Boutique event is from March 10th through March 16th, 2024. Learn more about helping or seeing if your teen may qualify online.

Through service-oriented activities, Macon A Difference Day unites the Randolph Macon campus and the community as students come together for one exciting day to express gratitude and support for the Ashland community. Residents in the Ashland area who need help on the exterior of their homes can learn more online and apply by April 8.

ReStore

In March, the ReStore will have been in its new space on Stonewall Parkway for 2 years! To celebrate our anniversary, we will hold a customer appreciation day on Saturday, March 16. Be one of the first 50 customers that day and enjoy an additional 20% off any one item (not to be combined with other discounts). We hope to see you soon!

Housing in the News

RTD’s recent take on the state of housing resonated with us as we are seeing many of these same challenges in Hanover and King William. Homeownership is becoming a reality for fewer and fewer people because of pricing and without creative community solutions through zoning and incentives for affordable homes, this issue will only get worse. https://ow.ly/9Onj50QHaRo

We love to see housing innovation in different communities and see how we might learn from their experiences. Check out the new concept of an ‘agrihood’ in this article.
