SPS United: Lisa Riley, principal secretary at Pipkin Middle School

“As Principal Cox’s secretary, my job has so many roles. The students are my No. 1 job. I feel that they need my full attention. If they are coming to me, they need to know they can ask for and get my help on any matter that is on their mind and that I know where to direct them for help.

I think the entire staff knows they can count on me to do whatever I can to make sure they have what they need. Also, I follow the principal’s lead on how things should be handled. I think I also put a sense of humor into most things, sometimes a giggle will de-escalate a bad mood or a tense situation.

I worked in many places before SPS, but my son-in-law has been a bus driver for SPS for many years. When my previous employer closed their doors, he convinced me I needed to apply at SPS! He knew that I have that “take care of everyone” way of doing things, and thought I needed to apply here. I’m grateful I got a job working for SPS, and I love working at Pipkin."
