Our fairly mild weather has us anxious to start a new gardening season. Our staff is here and waiting to help you with all of your spring gardening questions.

Here are some frequently asked questions this time of year:

  • CAN WE PLANT NOW? You can plant anytime the soil is not frozen. Use a combination of Soil Conditioner, steer compost, and mycorrhiza. AND don't forget the Root Simulator! Be prepared to water your new plantings periodically during the winter.

  • DO I NEED TO WATER DURING THE WINTER? Plants need water to survive especially newly planted plants. Water during the winter periodically. Watering newer plantings is especially important.

  • CAN I TREAT FOR INSECTS NOW? Nip the creepy crawlies in the bud. An application of Hi-Yield Dormant Oil before bud break will prevent infestations of many insects. The oil suffocates existing bugs, eggs, or larvae.

  • HOW CAN I GET MY GARDEN READY? Now is a great time to plan your garden. Reinvigorate your garden soil with a few inches of compost such as Harvest Supreme. For new garden beds, fill with our 50/50 Garden Mix which is a combination of our own 4 year compost and Steer compost. It's not too early to pick up your 2024 garden seeds. They just arrived and will probably sell out quickly. We also carry everything you need to get your seeds started. Join our Gardening in the high desert class March 17th @ 10am to learn more.

  • CAN I PRUNE MY PLANTS? It is best to wait until early March to prune. Watch for our Pruning Class on March 16th @ 10am. Call to register now: 541-317-1901.

TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT DESIGNING YOUR LANDSCAPE

This winter chill has us dreaming of spring projects in the yard.

Landsystems Nursery offers consultation and design services for all of your landscaping needs.

Consultations with Gary can include onsite discussions of all things plants, landscape, xeriscape, hardscape, turf and irrigation.

Landsystems also offers landscape design services utilizing visual imaging technology. This service is not part of the consultation offering, even though the process starts with a consultation. Digital pictures of your site are taken and entered into our software. We then design the landscape area with visual imaging.

PERENNIAL OF THE YEAR HOSTA

The National Garden Bureau has named 2024 the Year of the Hosta. Each year the NGB selects plants for North America that are easy to grow with great genetic diversity.

Did you know?

Hosta's range in size from 8" to 8' and flowers can be 4" to 4' tall. Their flower is attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. A great perennial for shaded areas in your garden.

Hosta's are known as a "friendship plant" meaning they can be easily split and shared. They can be dug up, divided, and replanted at almost any time during the year. Give a Hosta to your friends or neighbors.

NEW 2024 SEEDS HAVE ARRIVED!

Our 2024 seeds are here! Spice things up with a new variety this year. We carry a large selection of garden and vegetable seeds by Botanical Interest and Territorial Seed Company.

YOU CAN GET A JUMP START ON SPRING BY PLANTING SEEDS INDOORS

Growing your own veggies from seed lets you know every step of your food's journey from seed to plate. Before you start buying seeds, assess your area and get a realistic idea of what will succeed in your space. Do you know how much sunlight your garden gets? Most vegetables and many ornamental flowers require at minimum 6 hours of full sun daily. Next, consider the size of your garden - just how big will those plants be when they mature? Keeping these things in mind will help insure a successful harvest.

WHEN TO START SEEDS INDOORS: Check the seed packets for "days to germination" and when your plants will be ready to transplant. Don't start your seeds too early or your seedlings may grow weak and leggy.

GET GROWING: You will need seed growing supplies such as seed flats and seed starting soil, possibly even a jump start seedling heat mat. Check with the nursery to see all the gardening equipment available.

PLANTING YOUR SEEDLINGS: Make sure you "harden off" the young plants before putting them outside. This means gradually adjusting them to the outdoors by sitting them in a sheltered, sunny area outside for a few hours each day, and gradually increasing the amount of time and light exposure for 7-10 days.

HEALTHY PLANTS START FROM THE GROUND UP

Adding organic materials improves the ability of sandy soils such as ours to hold nutrients and water.

NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO GET YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN READY FOR GROWING.

We recommend adding a 2-3 inch layer of Gardener & Bloome Harvest Supreme over the planting area. Mix into the first 5-6 inches of soil with a spade, hoe, or rototiller. Harvest Supreme is an all-organic natural compost containing 15% composted chicken manure, bat guano, worm casting and kelp meal.

FEED YOUR TREE AND SHRUB SOIL

Gardener & Bloome Soil Building Compost is a nutrient-rich, all-natural organic compost containing forest humus, chicken manure, bat guano, worm castings, kelp meal, and gypsum. Cover the soil surface 1-3 inches deep around your plants and trees. Mulching with this product helps reduce watering needs while adding valuable nutrients.

MOLE OR VOLE?

Like moles, voles also tunnel and create runways through your lawn. When identifying the damage keep in mind voles typically tunnel on the surface and eat their way through the grass. They commonly make small runways underneath the surface that are about two inches in diameter. When it comes to moles, there are two types of identifying marks - runways and mounds. Mole runways are long, shallow tunnels on the surface of a lawn and look like small piles of dirt. Open holes to the surface are rarely seen in mole runways.

Mouse Magic Scent packs effectively repel mice and other rodents from nesting in unwanted areas. Place these pouches around your home, garage, garden, deck, storage space even your automobile.

This product is made of natural ingredients, is biodegradable and will not harm lawns, gardens or flowerbeds.

Volex is safe for use around crops, orchards, vineyards, pastures and greenhouses. Also pet and wildlife friendly. Apply to lawns and gardens, on golf courses, under greenhouses, in abandoned or active vole tunnels, or anywhere you see signs of vole activity.

The key to keeping rats and mice out of gardens, homes and structures is prevention. All natural Rodent Stopper repellent is a humane and safe option to use indoors or out. Easy and pleasant to use as it dries clear and odor free. We also carry Mole and Vole Stopper for those other pesky intruders.
