35 YEARS STRONG - The Early Years (1988-1996)
As part of celebrating our 35th anniversary, for the next several months through the end of the year, the DOORWAYS DISPATCH will be highlighting historical and noteworthy milestones and accomplishments beginning with our founding in 1988.
• Interfaith Residence D/B/A as DOORWAYS received its Certificate of Incorporation February 1988.
• DOORWAYS 1st fundraiser was held in April 1988 raising $40,000.
• Five apartment buildings comprised of sixteen units, were rented on Geyer, Botanical, and Hartford Avenues creating the first housing opportunities for clients. An office was set up on the Hartford property and later moved to South Grand.
• The Own Home program was established and paid its first rents, mortgages, and utilities on behalf of clients who were on the verge of losing their apartments and houses.
• In August of 1988, DOORWAYS accepted its first resident – a grandmother with three dependents.
• Completed in 1991, a 10-unit building on Delmar was renovated and became DOORWAYS first residential property.
• Funding from a HUD grant designated for people living with HIV allowed for the development of the 20-unit Anne's House on Jefferson and Park in 1994.
• Construction on a 21-unit building in the Soulard neighborhood followed and was completed in 1996.
• By 1996, DOORWAYS owns and operates three residential buildings and the Own Program is serving over 300 individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS.
