35 YEARS STRONG - The Early Years (1988-1996)

As part of celebrating our 35th anniversary, for the next several months through the end of the year, the DOORWAYS DISPATCH will be highlighting historical and noteworthy milestones and accomplishments beginning with our founding in 1988.

•  Interfaith Residence D/B/A as DOORWAYS received its Certificate of Incorporation February 1988.

•  DOORWAYS 1st fundraiser was held in April 1988 raising $40,000.

•  Five apartment buildings comprised of sixteen units, were rented on Geyer, Botanical, and Hartford Avenues creating the first housing opportunities for clients. An office was set up on the Hartford property and later moved to South Grand.

•  The Own Home program was established and paid its first rents, mortgages, and utilities on behalf of clients who were on the verge of losing their apartments and houses.

•  In August of 1988, DOORWAYS accepted its first resident – a grandmother with three dependents.

•  Completed in 1991, a 10-unit building on Delmar was renovated and became DOORWAYS first residential property.

•  Funding from a HUD grant designated for people living with HIV allowed for the development of the 20-unit Anne's House on Jefferson and Park in 1994.

•  Construction on a 21-unit building in the Soulard neighborhood followed and was completed in 1996.

•  By 1996, DOORWAYS owns and operates three residential buildings and the Own Program is serving over 300 individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Friends In Deed

Loafing With Friends

With nearly 40 guests in attendance, the Friends In Deed gathered on a Sunday afternoon at the Central West Home home of Philip Lyall and Sean Whelan for its "Loafing With Friends" social. Special thanks to Union Loafers Cafe and Bread Bakery  for providing delicious artisanal flatbreads and to Lazy Tiger for the signature cocktails served that afternoon.

“Loafing with Friends” raised more than $3,000 to help replenish much-needed supplies and housewares for new clients moving into apartments in Allen House on the Jefferson Avenue Campus. Thank you to all those who supported this fundraiser.

Upcoming events for the Friends In Deed Group include volunteering at the DOORWAYS booth at Tower Grove Pride September 23-24 and hosting BYOBoo Trivia on October 21. To volunteer at Tower Grove Pride, please sign-up at www.DoorwaysVolunteer.org

Back To School with Jumpstart

It is back to school time...annual rituals associated with the new school year, such as buying school supplies and uniforms, can be difficult for our clients who have children.

The Jumpstart Program, managed by Kim Mosby (pictured below), provides intensive supportive services to families with small children, many of whom are headed by single parents.

With financial help from local foundations and supporters, program staff are able to purchase supplies and school uniforms for the new school year. We are grateful for the support we are able to provide for the more than twenty-five students whose families are housed in the Jumpstart Program.
