Ocean Alliance Announces First-Ever Successful Drone-Based Tagging of
Endangered Blue and Fin Whales
For the first time ever, Ocean Alliance and their collaborators have successfully deployed suction cup data-tags on blue and fin whales in the Gulf of California using a drone (UAV). This new method of deploying tags is detailed in an April 2023 publication in the journal Royal Society Open Science and could have significant positive implications for whale science and conservation. SnotBot® is Ocean Alliance’s drone that collects the blow or snot from whales by hovering above the whale as the whale exhales. Read Full Press Release

Support Boats Needed for the Blackburn Challenge
Saturday, July 15, 2023
Do you have a motor boat in the greater Cape Ann area? Would you like to spend a few hours on the water enjoying the ocean air with a front-row seat to New England’s most iconic open-water human powered race? The Blackburn Challenge is a 20+ mile open water circumnavigation of Cape Ann using various human powered craft. Each year we have several support boats along the course for the safety of our participants. Each support boat monitors an assigned section of the course for approximately 3 hours and will receive a stipend for fuel. The Cape Ann Rowing Club will provide a safety briefing and orientation to ensure all volunteers are successful and have fun!

Cape Ann Animal Aid Pet of the Week
Zony, a Puerto Rican Sato, is still seeking a furever home. She is likely full grown but may gain some pounds. An intelligent dog that enjoys a nap, a long walk, and treats, she bond with her human very quickly and loves attention. She is completely house trained and has learned how to be on a leash and a couple of commands. Because I grew up as a street dog, I am working on getting to like other dogs, and would likely do best in a single-dog household (at least at first). If you think I’d make a good addition to your family, stop by and visit me today!
Please visit www.capeannanimalaid.org/ for more information about me and all the other animals waiting for homes here at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, 4 Paws Lane in Gloucester.
