Friends of the Manchester Public Library Seek Artists and Photographers for Submissions

The Friends of the Manchester Library will raise money with an art show and sale with 50% of proceeds donated for the continued maintenance of Library’s resources. The show is scheduled for October 20 to 22nd at the Library. The event will serve as a platform showcasing local artistic talent, and the Friends are now soliciting works. The Friends are calling for artists and photographers who wish to be considered to submit up to five digital images in JPEG format to by August 30th. JPEGs should be labelled with full name, title of work, and price. Any questions, please email

Registration is Open for Happy as a Clam 5K Race, Walk & Fun Dashes in Essex on September 15

Sponsored by the Friends of Essex Elementary, this event is open to anyone who wants to support a community school and all the wonderful enrichment programs the students hope to enjoy throughout the year. The 5K route meanders through the beautiful back roads of Essex. The Kids' Fun Dashes are always a hit, with even the littlest ones smiling from start to finish. Come out, lace up, and pound the pavement for the students of EES. It's sure to be another fun race this year! Virtual Gloucester Reads Event Features Best-Selling Author Kiley Reid

In the last event of the Gloucester Reads Summer Initiative, Kiley Reid, the author of the award-winning "Such a Fun Age, " will be appearing virtually for selected readings from her book and a panel discussion.  With live streaming at Gloucester Stage tonight, August 15, doors open for the free event at 6 p.m. with reading beginning at 6:30 p.m. The program moderator is Michea McCaffrey, co-chair of the Gloucester Racial Justice Team and member of the Gloucester Human Rights Commission. Rockport Teen Awarded Full Scholarship at Berklee College

(From Gloucester Times) Finn Mulkern is one of just 9 students selected to receive a full ride at to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. The Berklee City Music Scholarship will enable Mulkern to study and play the bass and also major in performance. The scholarship is a non-profit program designed to deliver “high-quality contemporary music education to youth from underserved communities at no or low cost. Since its inception, Berklee City Music has awarded 274 four-year, full tuition scholarships, totaling more than $33 million. Read More

Town Gets Grant to have Employees Stand and Walk at Their Desks

(From Ipswich Local News) The Town of Ipswich was awarded a $15,000 grant from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA) Health Trust. The grant is supposed to help create “a culture of health and well being in the work place,” according to a statement. Ipswich used the funds to buy 23 standing desks and 29 under-desk walking treadmills.According to various studies, using a standing desk may lower the risk of obesity and help users to avoid many of the risks associated with being too sedentary, such as high blood sugar levels and heart disease. 

Larry Kirby, longtime Manchester-by-the-Sea resident, author and survivor of the Battle at Iwo Jima, dies at age 99

(From Gloucester Times) Marine Corps veteran and author Lawrence F. “Larry” Kirby, who as a young soldier survived the Battle of Iwo Jima which many of his fellow Marines didn’t, and who witnessed the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945, died over the weekend. Kirby, the author of “Stories from the Pacific: The Island War 1942-1945,” was present at the 75th anniversary observance of the Battle of Iwo Jima in the State House’s Memorial Hall of Flags in February 2020. He was a 20-year-old platoon sergeant at the time of his landing on Iwo Jima. Read More

2024 Annual Resident Parking Stickers will be available beginning on 8/14/2023. Resident Parking Stickers are issued annually and are good from September 1 - August 31 of the following year. Please see the Town of Essex Regulations for the Issuance of Resident Parking Stickers (which was revised by the Board of Selectmen on July 24, 2023) for all updated policies, regulations, and fees.

Puppy, a 5-month-old neutered male, is being featured as part of Cape Ann Animal Aid’s Clear the Shelters campaign to help him find his forever home. Puppy’s adoption fee is reduced to $75. Puppy is a spirit cat — very shy with people. He may bond deeply with you or only just grant you the opportunity to touch him ... or not. He would be an excellent companion for other cats. Puppy would be a great choice for patient people with a quiet household, or where you don’t have a lot of time to devote to a pet — most of these kitties do not need or want much attention from people. Puppy is not a good choice for homes with children.
