SOCIAL JUSTICE COUNCIL RETREAT ~ 2024

TUUCW’s Social Justice Council (SJC) began the new ‘24-‘25 year with an inspiring weekend retreat August 23rd & 24th. Friday evening, Janet and Jim Luongo hosted a potluck which gave members time to reconnect and hear stories of summertime renewal. Saturday morning Rev. Alan introduced Alex Wiesendanger, author of Seeds of Justice, Organizing Your Church to Transform the World. Alex facilitated a dynamic workshop which emphasized building 1:1 relationships through deep listening, shared stories and identified values. Such relationships can lead to powerful collaboration toward creating transformative change. (See AlexTindalWiesenganer.com)

After, members from the SJC’s 12 committees focused on the council’s vision and structure. Jim Francek and David Vita facilitated, with the outcomes being excitement over new directions the council plans to take. For more information please click HERE:

RSVP FOR "APPETITE FOR JUSTICE" - DINNER AND DISCUSSION

Poverty By America by Matthew Desmond

Join the BLM Team on Saturday, September 28 (6:00 PM, Meeting House) for an evening of delicious food and engaging discussion. Inspired by Matthew Desmond’s “Poverty, by America” (don’t have to read it to attend!), we will consider why, in one of the wealthiest states, 11% of households live in poverty and another 29% struggle as Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained and Employed (ALICE). Here are two bites to chew on from NPR and The Atlantic.

A homemade meal will be served and we ask guests to bring a beverage. In the spirit of the evening and in recognition of Hunger Action Month, we will accept donations for the Bridgeport Rescue Mission. RSVP to blacklivesmatter@uuwestport.org by 9/20.

Please join us to break bread, build community and feed justice.

MYSTICISM: WHERE SCIENCE, ART, AND SPIRITUALITY MEET

October 2, 2024—June 18, 2025 ~ Wednesdays, 7:00−9:00 PM

Longtime members Bart Stuck and Marjorie Partch are leading these weekly discussions, which follow readings and lectures on ancient concepts and cutting-edge theories, exploring:

• Organized religion is an increasingly irrelevant part of daily life, with growing numbers citing their religious affiliation as NONE.

• Materialism is ascendant, with more people questioning the meaning of life.

• At the same time, Western science, after five hundred years, finds it has been studying five percent of the Universe.

Join these classes and begin to perceive the unity and hidden order of the world around us — the Uni-verse. Sources will include The Tao of Physics, and correspondence between psychoanalyst C.G. Jung and physicist Wolfgang Pauli: Atom and Archetype.

To participate via ZOOM, contact Bart Stuck - bartstuck@gmail.com
